Enniscorthy U16 boys involved in Leinster Lions

28/1/2015

7 of our U16 boys traveled up to Glenanne to play Three Rock Rovers in a tough encounter against a team featuring players selected for Leinster. A tough game ensued with centre backs Daithi and Ivan playing strongly keeping the persistent Three Rock boys from the goal. Liam and John linked up nicely with each other on the right wing creating problems for the Three Rock defence. Ruadhan played strongly on the left wing, slowing down the Three Rock defense on many occasions. A short corner was awarded to Three Rock in the latter stages of the first half and a superb drag flick resulted in the only goal in the match. Keeper Luke kept out further drag flick attempts with spectacular diving saves. William earned short
corners for the Lions side which they were unlucky not to score from. The second half was a tough situation for both teams and at one point the Lions were reduced to ten men when vice-captain Liam was forced to retire to the sidelines after receiving a blow to the knee. Captain Daithi made sure the team kept the scorelines the way they were, clearing the ball from the goal line on two occasions. John forced Three Rock to play more cautiously as he slowed down the attack on multiple occasions with well timed tackles. Liam came back on and the Lions side kept playing impressively and to almost concede on two occasions with shots from William barely going wide. Overall a great performance from all the Enniscorthy boys in Dublin today.

Enniscorthy players involved: Daithi, Liam, Ivan, Luke, William, John and Ruadhan

Senior Men - A close encounter for both sides

In one of the few matches to survive the weather, Enniscorthy travelled on Saturday to St. Andrew's College in Blackrock to take on Dublin giants Monkstown, and came away with a creditable point in a close encounter between two evenly matched sides.

The Slaneysiders travelled up the N11 with a strong outfit, missing only 'flu victim David Simmons and Greg Hawkins. Graham Hill returned in goal, while Andrew Rothwell, Keith Ogilvie, Clive Rothwell and Martyn Veitch started at the back. In midfield, manager Fraser Rothwell opted for Roy and Glenn Chapman, with Jonathon Rothwell operating on the left wing. Up front Jason Rothwell, Daithí Medcalf and Cathal Ó Suilleabháin provided the attacking threat.

The early exchanges saw Enniscorthy get two quick long corners but were unable to gain any advantage. This proved to be the blueprint for much of the first half as the visitors were the dominant side but unable to seriously threaten the Monkstown goal. The visitors, though, were making life relatively easy for Monkstown as their forays forward lacked width; Jason Rothwell was getting few opportunities to make his trademark runs down the right wing. Daithí Medcalf had an excellent opportunity to open the scoring, receiving a pass from Ó Suilleabháin from the right, to his position close to the Monkstown left post, but he fumbled his shot, and the home side escaped. Despite holding the balance of play, Enniscorthy had to be wary as the blues were dangerous on the counter- attack.

The warnings of Monkstown skill and attacking threat, obvious from their infrequent forays into the Enniscorthy semi- circle in the first half, grew more real after the break. The tables were turned as the hosts turned possession into sustained pressure on the Enniscorthy defence, and Ogilvie and Veitch, in particular, were kept busy. Hill was forced into a string of spectacular saves- the most notable keeping a ferocious drag flick out following a short corner for the hosts- in order to keep the scores level. As the half continued, Enniscorthy began to fight their way back into the game, while tension between both sets of players increased. Indeed, Monkstown were briefly down to ten men as umpire David Medcalf handed out a green card. The disparity in numbers, though, was all too brief, as Enniscorthy were unable to capitalise. Enniscorthy's cause was not helped by injuries to captain Clive Rothwell and Glenn Chapman, but the Wexford men held on. In fact, they had chances of their own to win the match- McAllister and Jowett both going close, while Andrew Rothwell once again proved an attacking threat from the right side of defence- but the game ended on a 0-0 scoreline.

The target had been a point away at a less than happy hunting ground- Pembroke Wanderers had knocked out Enniscorthy last season at St. Andrews in the Leinster Minor Cup- and a point was duly delivered. The Wexford men's high- tempo approach, combined with an unwillingness to allow Monkstown time on the ball, paid dividends. With five of their seven remaining matches at home in the league, Enniscorthy can be confident of another strong finish to the season.

Squad: Graham Hill; Andrew Rothwell; Keith Ogilvie; Clive Rothwell (c) ; Martyn Veitch; Roy Chapman; Glenn Chapman; Jonathon Rothwell; Jason Rothwell; Daithí Medcalf; Cathal Ó Suilleabháin; Seamus McAllister; Kieran Costello; Liam Jowett; P.J. Pierce, Robbie Walshe.

Ennicorthy 1st yr Girls Vs Naas

11/1/2015

Today saw Enniscorthy 1st years host Naas in a friendly home game. The game started off with two well matched teams.

Enniscorthy started brightly with Eve Furlong, Aoife Mernagh and Elaine Quigley pressing hard up front and they were rewarded early on with a penalty corner chance. Susannah Doyle thought she had scored but the strike was ruled out as it was outside the circle. Naas then took the lead with a goal against the run of play. Enniscorthy fought back with Laura Smith, Hannah Sweeney and Emer Doyle combining to create a chance for Elaine Quigley who rounded the last defender to score. With the game tied at one all it became more open. The play went from end to end with Sophie Gillot making her debut in goal managed to pull off a magnificent save to keep the game all square. Katie Sutton, Alice Medcalf and Eabha Farell all working hard in defence restricted Naas to one goal from a penalty corner.

With the score at 2-1, Enniscorthy introduced some new blood, Anna Kavanagh, Eimear Doyle, Aoife Mahon, Ellen Creed and Rianna Hourihan, who all contributed to set up Elaine Quigley for her second goal. Enniscorthy then reverted to a kicking back instead of a goalie, which gave Naas the opportunity to score the winning goal.

All Enniscorthy's players performed very well with special mention to all the 6th class girls who were making their debut at this level. The girls next game will be the first round of the cup on the 25th of January

2015 OFF to a winning start for Enniscorthy Men!!

Enniscorthy Hockey Club men made a winning start to 2015 with a 2-0 win over Corinthians IV at a freezing Whitechurch Park on Saturday.

The Slaneysiders showed little sign of any cobwebs following the Christmas break as they played productive hockey throughout. Manager Fraser Rothwell was able to field a strong side even without captain Clive Rothwell, as well as Jonathon Rothwell and Graham Hill. Former captain Kieran Costello made a welcome return and experienced goalkeeper John Murphy made his debut for the Wexford outfit.

The visitors had the better of the opening exchanges, but Costello should have done better with his shot which went narrowly wide. Corinthians were having trouble coping with the strong midfield work of Glenn Chapman and a typically bustling display from Ó Suilleabháin up front. Both sides, though, struggled to convert possession into solid chances. The introduction of Jowett and Medcalf added some much- needed pace to the visiting attack; Jowett making an almost immediate impact with a shot on target. Set- piece attacks were at a premium, but Enniscorthy were able to benefit from a mistake from a Corinthians short corner. First runner Roy Chapman successfully disrupted the hosts attack, and made a lung- bursting run the length of the pitch, before a pass found Ó Suilleabháin who put the Wexford men into the lead. This run by Chapman was probably the highlight of a very strong performance by the midfielder.

After the break the hosts found another gear and put Enniscorthy under pressure for a sustained period. Veitch, Hawkins and Ogilvie were to the forefront in repelling these attacks and keeping the reds at bay. Corinthians danger man Harkins, though, was unable to find the continuity he had in the first half and Enniscorthy were quick to respond to any moves forward by him. Gradually Enniscorthy got on top after a nervous opening ten minutes of the second half, and grew increasingly dangerous as time went by. Jowett, McAlister and Medcalf all had chances to double the lead but the Corinthians 'keeper responded well, while Walshe was also causing headaches for the home defence. A second goal was inevitable- the question was when. Jason Rothwell provided the answer with fifteen minutes to go; taking advantage of confusion in the home defence, he grabbed possession and using his pace forced his way past the opposition defenders before finishing to the bottom right hand corner.

This result sees Enniscorthy move to the top of division seven. Next weekend the Slaneysiders return to Dublin, but this time to take on Monkstown V in what promises to be a challenging encounter for the visitors.

Panel: John Murphy; Andrew Rothwell; Martin Veitch; Keith Ogilvie; Kieran Costello; Jason Rothwell; Roy Chapman; Glenn Chapman; David Simmons; Seamus McAlister; Cathal Ó Suilleabháin; Greg Hawkins; Daithí Medcalf; Liam Jowett; Robbie Walshe.
