Suttonians take all three points from 1st Men

The Astro Active Centre Enniscorthy was the venue for what was going to be a even and tough game of Hockey, for the 1st XI Men’s teams of Enniscorthy and Suttonians. In the previous encounter with the sides in Dublin a two all draw was the result. Last Saturday was every bit as close but Suttonians took three points back to Dublin as they were victorious over the South East men in a thrilling two goals to one game.

Enniscorthy started strong with a shot on goal on the 5 minute mark but the visitors game goalie was able to deal with the effort. With early stages of the game evenly match with both teams working their way over their opposition 23’s. The first goal of the game cam from a Suttonians after 15 minutes, from an attack down the right hand side that was worked into the Enniscorthy cirlce, goalkeeper Graham Hill was blindsided by his players and say the shot late and was unable to react to the onrushing ball. Suttonians kept the pressure on and gained a short corner shortly after, goalie’ Hill made a beautiful save and along with his defensive runners Roy Chapman, Martyn Veitch, Keith Ogilvie and Clive Rothwell cleared the ball. Enniscorthy knew from the teams previous meeting that they were well capable on getting back into the game and were not worried by the pressure of Suttonians as they knew their time would come. Ten minutes before half time the Dublin side attacked the down the middle with a long ball that made its way to a Suttonians player that skilfully chipped passed Hill and defender Andrew Rothwell could not stretch far enough to steal the ball before the attacker put the ball high into the net. The visitors kept going in search of their third goal but the defence of Ogilvie, Veitch and Clive and Andrew Rothwell along with midfielders David Simmons and the Chapman brothers Roy and Glenn kept them out as they were called upon to clear the danger on a number of occasions. Although Enniscorthy were two goals down they kept going and through Liam Jowett they attacked the visitors goal but a great save from the Suttonians goalie’ kept Enniscorthy out on this occasion.

The second half saw Donal Doyle’s men up their game and force the visitors to defend more. The Slaney Siders gained their first short corner of the half just two minutes into play. Shortly after this unsuccessful short corner, Jowett managed to steal the ball from the opponents hit out, and after excellent linking play with Edmundas Liukimas, managed to slot the ball into the back of the Sutton goal. Forwards Jason Rothwell and John McWey along with the rest of the team worked tirelessly to create chances for the home side. Defenders and keeper Graham Hill managed to fend off the rest of the attacks in the second half. No matter how hard the home side tried for the remainder of the game they were unable to break down the visiting defence leaving the score at 2-1 to the visitors. Enniscorthy can be happy with the effort levels put in by the entire squad but it wasn’t meant to be on this occasion.

Enniscorthy will be back on the road next weekend as they prepare for their next league encounter against YMCA in Dublin this coming Saturday.

Men 2nd XI loose out despite strong performance

15/2/2016

Another frustrating game for Enniscorthy 2nd men’s team last Saturday as they travelled to Mount Temple Comprehensive School on the Northside of Dublin City where they took on Clontarf Hockey Club. The final result Enniscorthy came out on the wrong side of a 5 goals to 3 game, but what a great game of hockey it was to watch.

Both teams started the strong as they went in search of the opening goal. In the early stages Clontarf were awarded multiple short corners as Enniscorthy had to defend hard to keep their goal clear. No matter how hard Clontarf tried they were unable to score, thanks to short corner defenders Ivan Rothwell, Nick Peare, PJ Pierce and Mick Jordan along with goalkeeper Luke Doyle. The away team were awarded a short corner of their own after 15 minutes where they made no mistake as Daithi Medcalf found the back board of the home teams goal. Ivan Rothwell did well to put the Clontarf defenders off as he sent them running early, resulting in them breaking the line and thus being a man down for the short corner, this aided Medcalf in scoring as he had extra space to manoeuvre the ball past the remaining defenders. Shortly after the Dublin side answered with a goal of their own. Enniscorthy went in search of their second goal before half time but unfortunately were unable to succeed. Clontarf however, scored their second gaol before half time came, 2 goals to 1 in Clontarf’s favour as the whistle blew.

The half time talk from the senior players in the southeast teams squad was positive as Enniscorthy were playing well and were still capable of taking all three points from the game. In the second half strong play from Enniscorthy midfields Alan Smith, Daithi Medcalf and Andrew Rothwell saw Enniscorthy push up the pitch and put the Clontarf defence under pressure. Enniscorthy went on to score 2 goals before the final whistle. Centre forward Robbie Walshe and midfielder Alan Smith were the travelling teams scorers. Clontarf however, like to first half, out scored Enniscorthy by a goal and bagged themselves three goals in the second half, two of which were goals from penalty flicks awarded against the visitors. Enniscorthy two goals down going into the last ten minutes still had time to salvage a point but the efforts of all squad members was to no avail as Clontarf stayed strong and held on to their two goal lead.

Enniscorthy can be proud of their performance and may fell hard done by as their performance may have deserved a share of points but the unpredictability is after all why we love sport. Next up for the boys is St Brendan’s Phoenix Park who they play in Enniscorthy this coming Saturday.

Enniscorthy Squad:
Luke Doyle; Ivan Rothwell; PJ Pierce; Mick Jordan; Nick Peare; Andrew Rothwell; Alan Smith; Daithi Medcalf; Eamon Sweeney; Robbie Walshe; William Durnan; Rory Maguire; Jack Redmond; David Mulligan.

1st & 2nd LADIES go head to head!

15/2/2016

Enniscorthy ladies first and seconds went head to head on Friday night last at the Astro Active Centre. This fixture has in the past proved to be an entertaining one and this did not disappoint.

As expected, the first started the stronger and within the first five minutes they had put together several attacks on goal, Sonja Rynhart’s three attempts were saved by seconds goalie Aoife Foran. Karri Clifford’s attempt was well executed but again, Foran was proving very solid in the goal for the second XI. The first XI opened the scoring with 10 minutes on the clock, Karri Clifford’s lovely cross into the circle saw Sonja Rynhart converting from the penalty spot.

From Kim O’ Connor’s hit-out the second XI produced their best sequence of play since the start, with some great passages of play between Niamh Buttle and Laura Redmond up the right. The first XI’s defence proved resilient to the attack and from this there was a counter attack involving Lisa Frayne and Nancy Dunphy who’s pass linked in to the well positioned Sonja Rynhart. Her first attempt was saved by Foran in the goal, however, when given a second opportunity she converted making it 2-0 to the first XI.

The first short corner came on the 15 minute mark, it was followed in quick succession by a second.  Anna Flood’s well taken goal was disallowed as the ball was deemed not to have been stopped outside the circle. Half time score 2-0 favouring the First XI.

The restart saw the first XI continuing as they had left off before the break, a skilful passage of play between Nancy Dunphy and Deirdre Kehoe saw them winning their first short corner of the half. The corner was well executed, Deirdre Kehoe injecting the ball to Anna Flood, who’s shot was on target, but she was denied a goal by the outreaching Foran in goal.

The first goal of the second half came after a strong break down the middle resulted in a short corner which was skilfully converted by Karri Clifford. Minutes later, the ball was intercepted by Olive Lett on the half way line, her pass finding the stick of Nancy Dunphy, who found the back of the net making it 4-0.

The first XI’s defence were called into action after the re-start to deal with an attack from Lillian Howlin and Fiona Breen, the ball being well cleared by Aine O’Brien, who’s clearance put the first XI back in a strong attacking position, this time the defence of Roisin O’Muiri stopping what looked like a certain goal. Sonja Rynhart converted on one more occasion to secure a hat trick and the final score stood at 5-0.

This game was in reality about the attacking strengths of the first XI and the defence of the second XI and while the experience and strength of the first XI was superior, the second XI showed skill and commitment and it was a performance for them to be proud of. The match proved to be a valuable run out for both sides ahead of next Sunday’s South East Cup fixtures. The fist XI drawn against local rivals Wexford and the second XI drawn against Kilkenny 2. Both matches are scheduled for the Astro Active Centre at 10am and 2pm respectively. Best of luck to both teams.

Enniscorthy Squad 1sts: Fiona Rothwell; Julie Watchorn; Serena Hatton; Katie Owen; Olive Lett; Leah Chapman; Nancy Dunphy; Lisa Frayne; Anna Flood; Deirdre Kehoe; Karri Clifford; Sonja Rynhart; Aine O'Brien; Bridget Gainford; Ruth Harrington; Caroline Doyle.

Enniscorthy Squad 2nds: Aoife Foran; Roisin O'Muiri; Kim O'Connor; Laura Redmond; Saoirse Power; Fiona Breen; Roisin Bridges; Aoileann Hourihane; Lillian Howlin; Georgina Izatd; Niamh Buttle; Roisin Nolan.

Semi Final awaits U14 Girls!

11/2/2016

Enniscorthy first year girls earned themselves a place in the semi final of the under 14 West Leinster Cup on Sunday, putting in an impressive performance and beating Newbridge II by 8 goals to nil.  This was many of the girls first ever competitive 11 a side match on a full sized pitch.

Enniscorthy started strongly with wings Eimear Doyle and Rebecca Leech causing the Newbridge defence all sorts of problems, and forcing the goalie to make a number of saves.  The breakthrough came after five minutes when Martha Dunne was perfectly placed to slot home a cross by Doyle.

The midfield trio of Niamh Ogilve, Ciara Kelly, and Caoimhe Larkin were impressive in their control and distribution of the ball, ensuring that the pressure on the visitors was kept up, and giving Dunne the opportunity to take her second goal of the day.  Her hatrick came shortly after when she pounced on a deflected ball following a strong Eimear Doyle shot from the right wing. Short corner practice paid off as pusher out Aoife Mahon neatly netted a return ball form Niamh Ogilvie to finish the scoring for the first half.

Enniscorthy started the second half as they finished the first with Coaimhe Larkin scoring at the far post from a Martha Dunne cross.  Niamh Ogilvie added a further two goals with strong shots from the top of the circle during short corner routines.  The scoring was finished off by Ciara Kelly with a strong shot from the top of the circle.

Enniscorthy’s domination of the game meant that defence of Anna Kavanagh, Lettie Hassett, Eabha Farrell, and Aoife Mahon were able to defend high up the pitch, and they dealt well with any attacks that came their way.  In fact, such was their strength that fledgling goalkeeper Norah McGinty had only one save to make for the whole match.

The substitutes of Rioghna Hourihan, Emer Bowe, Gilly Phelan, and Ciara B Doyle also performed brilliantly, slotting seamlessly into their allotted positions despite the cold and the rain.

A semi final encounter with either Naas or Abbeyleix away on the 28th February looms and promises to be an exciting but a much tougher encounter.

A hard-fought three points for 1st Men

In these early stages of the second half of Leinster’s Division 5 league every point counts and Enniscorthy Hockey Men 1st know that every three points will make a huge difference at the final weekend of the season. Last weekend the Slaney men travelled to NSC Abbotstown, Dublin to take on St. Brendan’s Phoenix Park, the last times these sides meet was in Enniscorthy, where the visitors took all three points in a tight game that finished 1-0. This time, in Dublin, the visitor from Wexford took all three points themselves in a reverse of the result with a 1-0 to Enniscorthy.

The South East team travel with a strong team but were missing key players Glenn Chapman and Edmundas Liukimas. As the game tipped off you knew this was going to be a tight game as Brendan’s started very strong putting the Enniscorthy defence under pressure but the visitors were cool under pressure and kept the Dubliners at bay. Graham Hill in goal was called upon in the early stages and showed his dedication and determination as he dived to save a goal only to have to put his head and helmet in the way to stop a rebound shot. This was a key point in the visitor’s game, all players were going to put their bodies on the line and gave everything in this game. Enniscorthy made good ground down the right side with Liam Jowett, Niall Maguire and Jacob English working very well together and kept the physical Dublin defence busy.  St. Brendan’s came very close to breaking the deadlock when a long ball came threw from midfield only to rebound of the post and fall into the path of a Brendan’s forward, fortunately for Enniscorthy, Hill was quick to react and deal with the shot. Enniscorthy attacked and came close to breaking down the home side defence through attacks from Roy Chapman and John McWey and all beautifully controlled from centre midfield by Daithi Medcalf. Half time came and it was all square. Donal Doyle took his men in and wanted his boys to keep up the hard work and keep fighting.

In the second half Enniscorthy were kept busy as St. Brendan’s were awarded multiple short corners thankfully the short corner defence of Graham Hill, Roy Chapman, Martyn Vietch, Clive Rothwell and Keith Ogilvie was strong and dealt with each and everyone. Keith Ogilvie in particular was strong as he blocked down a number of powerful shots coming his way. On a day that involved the entire squad to be on their game, David Simmons and Andrew Rothwell were also called upon when short corner defence players were forced off due to blood substitutions and were ready to fill their boots. Enniscorthy were awarded one short corner in the second half and ended up with a goal from Niall Maguire. St. Brendan’s came back at Enniscorthy but the Wexford team were determined to hold onto the one goal advantage. The final play of the game was a short corner to St. Brendan’s and they put everyone forward as they went in search of a share of the points, the home side defence was not letting it slip and Keith Ogilvie yet again cleared the ball and it ended with an Enniscorthy win.

A break awaits the Enniscorthy Men next weekend as they have a weekend off before they take on Suttonians in Enniscorthy on the 20th February.

Enniscorthy Squad: Graham Hill; Andrew Rothwell; Keith Ogilvie; Clive Rothwell; Martyn Vietch; David Simmons; Daithi Medcalf; Liam Jowett; Roy Chapman; John McWey; Niall Maguire; Jacob English. Coach: Donal Doyle; Manager: Fraser Rothwell.
