A close game for our 1st year Girls

The First Year girls travelled to Naas on Sunday for the semi-final of the West Leinster League, where they were pitted against a strong and experienced Naas side.  Enniscorthy were by far the better prepared team, and they started strongly with the forward line of Rebecca Leech, Martha Dunne, and Emer Doyle putting early pressure on the Naas defence, fed by the midfield players Caoimhe Larkin, Niamh Ogilvie and Lettie Hassett. Naas responded quickly though forcing a number of short corners which were well defended by Anna Kavanagh, Ciara Kelly, Ailbhe Harrington, Eabha Farrell, and Norah McGinty. Both sides had scoring chances no more so than in the dying second of the first half when an Enniscorthy attempt on goal was counter attacked by Naas shooting narrowly wide to leave the half time score 0-0.

Naas started the second half strongly but Enniscorthy fought their way back with the help of substitutes Ciara B Doyle, Ciara O Connor, and Emer Bowe, and they gained a number of short corners which despite strong shots by Niamh Ogilvie failed to break the deadlock. Enniscorthy went through a period of sustained pressure by Naas who forced goalkeeper McGinty to make a number of fine saves.  Sadly the pressure told and Naas scored with 13 minutes to go. Enniscorthy rallied valiantly and despite the introduction of Rioghna Hourihan, they were unable to equalise leaving the final score 1-0 to Naas.

Despite the loss they were many positives to take from the day, not least the excellent link play between players especially between the Niamh Ogilvie and Ciara Kelly, fantastic determination and effort by Lettie Hassett, and brilliant saves by fledgling goalkeeper Norah McGinty, The Management team of Orla, Judith and Keith were very proud of the performance of the squad both during the match and in their preparations. Well done all.

Enniscorthy Ladies 1sts had a solid victory over Wexford Ladies 2nds on a fresh and mild Sunday morning at the Astro active Centre Enniscorthy.

The ‘Scorthy girls got off to a good start and were awarded a short corner in the first 3 minutes of the game but it was quickly cleared by Wexford. This made the home side fight harder. Katie Owen switched a great ball across the pitch to Leah Chapman who slipped it into the circle to Captain Lisa Frayne who had a cracker of a shot into the back of the net, giving the Wexford goal keeper no chance.  With good link play between Anna Flood, Sonja Rynhart and Lisa Frayne another goal was awarded when Anna crossed a lovely ball which met with Sonja and she scored on the rebound. Again there was nice play coming from the backs where Áine O’Brien was sending strong balls into Anna in the midfield who then passed to Sonja and took a shot but unfortunately it was a wide. Wexford fought back and attacked the ‘Scorthy goal but Áine cleverly shadowed the players and won a turnaround. Moments later, Wexford won a short corner but thankfully it went wide. Just before half time, the Enniscorthy ladies had a few attempts on goal but nothing came from them.  Sonja’s fantastic deflect on one ball just narrowly missed getting inside the post.

Enniscorthy came out strong in the second half and attacked straight away from tip off. There was an attack by Wexford, but it was blocked by Leah Chapman at the top of the D.  The Wexford ladies won a free outside the Enniscorthy circle. Goal keeper Fiona Rothwell made a great save and sent the ball out to the wing. Kim O’Connor, on her debut with the firsts, sent a great ball up the right wing to Bridget Gainford which was then collected by Lisa and passed onto Anna who took a shot on goal but was unlucky not to score.  Sonja won one of Wexford’s hit outs, passed a quick and sharp ball into Lisa who scored in the right corner of the goal. Soon again, the ‘Scorthy girls had an attack on their opponents circle but the shot went wide. Lisa Frayne’s hat-trick came when she took a shot just inside the top of the D and successfully sent it into the left corner of the net. The Slaney siders got another short corner but didn’t manage to put it on the score board. Wexford’s attack got a break through when they sent the ball down the line and into the ‘Scorthy D where the ball hit the post, this was quickly cleared by Ruth Harrington up the line. There were great attacks made by Caroline Doyle and Sonja on the wing and Sonja made use of the ball with her reverse stick sending it into the bottom right corner of the goal. More beautiful link ups and play took place between Anna and Ruth. Ruth then took a side-line ball passing it into Leah who then passed to Sonja who again made a beautiful reverse flick and was granted a goal giving her a hat-trick also. After Wexford’s pass back, Enniscorthy were strong in attack and won a short. Áine’s pass out to Sonja at the top of the D and onto Laura O’Leary just barely missed the goal post. Towards the end the game Ruth Harrington got her first goal of the season when she connected with a rebounded shot of Lisa’s and pushed it past the goalies feet.

Full time: Enniscorthy 7 – Wexford 0.

Enniscorthy Squad: Fiona Rothwell, Kim O’Connor, Áine O’Brien, Katie Owen, Ruth Harrington, Anna Flood, Lisa Frayne, Bridget Gainford, Leah Chapman, Caroline Doyle, Sonja Rynhart, Laura O’Leary.

It ends all square in Rathgar

The hockey men of Enniscorthy 1st team were on the road yet again this week as they made the journey up the M11 to The High School, Rathgar to take on Rathgar 3rd on a glorious spring afternoon. On the teams previous meeting in Enniscorthy last November it ended with a 2-0 win for Enniscorthy.

Like their last trip, Donal Doyle’s men were forced into trialling a new line out as the southeast men were missing a number of their usual players. Thanks to the exceptional depth in the squad the players that push the missing men were more than happy to take their chance. The four players that made up Enniscorthy defence was some what different than its usual line up with just one 1st team regular in Clive Rothwell that remained. Mick Jordan, Ivan Rothwell and PJ Pierce filled the other defensive positions.

The southeast men started strong with early forays of attacking play down both wings, with David Simmons and John McWey combining well together on the left hand side Similarly, Andrew Rothwell and Niall Maguire combined well on the right hand side. The visitors came close to opening their goal count for the day on a number of occasions such as shots from Daithi Medcalf and from Andrew Rothwell who took a reverse stick shot that narrowly went wide of the top corner of the goal. A strong Rathgar defence and narrow misses by Enniscorthy prevented any change in the score at this point. Midway through the first half Rathgar won a short corner from which they succeed in slotting the ball by ‘keeper Graham Hill and his defence. After this, Rathgar were awarded a number of short corners but the Slaney siders were awake to the threat that the attackers possessed and were able to deal with their attempts. Shortly after, Enniscorthy, who had been awarded a number of short corners themselves, took their chance to attack the Rathgar goal. A ball struck by Roy Chapman was deflected in the direction of the goal by David Simmons, and upon rebound after being saved by the home side’s keeper, Simmons struck again and slotted the ball into the back of the net. Chapman came close himself when a shot from the top of the circle went within millimetres of the Rathgar goal.

At half time Doyle’s men knew that while they had some strong attacks in the half, they had not taking full advantage of them. Rathgar knew the game was still up for the taking and started the second half strong, but thanks to a solid defence, Hill wasn’t called upon on many occasions. However, fatigue seemed to seep through both teams as neither side could open up their oppositions defence and the game went on to finish as a one all draw.

Enniscorthy have their final home game of the league this coming Saturday when they take on Avoca at one o’clock in the Astro Active Centre Bellefield.

Enniscorthy Squad: Graham Hill; Clive Rothwell; Mick Jordan; PJ Pierce; Ivan Rothwell; Andrew Rothwell; David Simmons; Daithi Medcalf; Roy Chapman; John McWey; Niall Maguire; Eamon Sweeney. Coach: Donal Doyle; Manager: Fraser Rothwell

The Astro Active Centre Enniscorthy hosted the cup semi-final on Sunday, March 6th where Enniscorthy Ladies 2nds played a tough game against Wexford Ladies 1st. The last encounter of these two teams resulted in a Wexford victory which sparked a flame in the 'Scorthy girls to come back stronger as a team. On this day, it was the victorious Wexford side who left the pitch with their place secured in the cup final after beating the Enniscorthy 2nds 4-0.

The whistle blew at 2:30pm marking the start of which would become a high intensity game. Wexford gained  a short corner 5 minutes after tip off but a goal was not conceded  as the Wexford shot was struck  to the right of the goal post. This lucky escape gave Enniscorthy the urge to reform themselves when a ball passed from Enniscorthy defender Aine O'Brien,  allowed attacker Roisin Nolan to carry the ball strongly up the line but was stopped by an oncoming Wexford player and also awarding Wexford a free  from the half way mark. A quick free allowed the Wexford side to enter Enniscorthy circle leaving an open shot on Enniscorthy goalie Fiona Rothwell. Fiona made a fantastic save and the ball was then worked out by Enniscorthy back Serena Hatton. The two teams did not stay level for much longer as a Wexford short corner allowed the ball to find Enniscorthy's net, leaving the score now 1-0 to Wexford. From push back, Enniscorthy worked the ball through Wexford midfield where Niamh Buttle, Enniscorthy midfielder, sent a potentially super ball cross from left side to far post but unfortunately was not found by an Enniscorthy player. Bridget Gainford and Stephanie Kinsella's hard fights in midfield kept Wexford's Lisa Codd and Burt very much away from Enniscorthy circle. Later in the first half saw Wexford earn another short corner which was well defended by Enniscorthy but unfortunately led to a second short corner. Enniscorthy back Aine O'Brien made a great clearing which allowed the girls to work the ball out again. Soon again Wexford were on the attack and managed to rattle Enniscorthy net which tied up the first half where Wexford lead 2-0.

Enniscorthy entered the second half with a renewed vigour after a worthy tactical talk from coaches Ivanna Yates, Irene Doyle and Jacinta Kinsella. The home side worked the ball out of Wexford 16 yard beating a strong wexford press in the first few minutes. It wasn't long until Wexford obtained the first short corner of the second half where their striker scored a powerful goal. Enniscorthy   played with pure determination  now in hope of reaching Wexford's goal. Great runs were made by Caroline and Roisin Nolan putting pressure on the Wexford side. Wexford were soon awarded with two consecutive short corners but the ball did not make its way past  Enniscorthy goalie Fiona who made tremendous saves.  As the game was soon  drawing to a close, Wexford  entered the circle with power and scored once again. The final whistle blew resulting in a 4-0 victory to Wexford. Wexford tactically played to win short corners throughout the game but were kept from scoring on numerous occasions due to great work from Enniscorthy defence consisting of Aine O'Brien, Serena Hatton, Fiona Rothwell (gk) Roisin O'Muiri, Saoirse Power and Kim O'Connor.

Enniscorthy Squad: Fiona Rothwell, Kim O'Connor, Roisin O Muiri, Aine O Brien, Roisin Nolan, Serena Hatton, Caroline Doyle, Niamh Buttle, Meagan Petzke, Georgina Izatt, Roisin Bridges, Orlaith Breen Saoirse Power, Stephanie Kinsella, Bridget Gainford ,Laura Redmond

CHAMPIONS - U14 boys win the league

Enniscorthy's under 14 boys secured the club's first-ever boys title with a resounding 7-0 victory over Newbridge at the Astro Active Centre on Sunday.

Kai Gahan's side went into their final match of the Leinster B division unbeaten, knowing a win or a draw would suffice to secure league victory. Her charges took control of the contest early on, Charlie Dunne opening the scoring with a reverse stick shot after just three minutes after good work by Pearse Rogan and Ronan O'Leary. Five minutes later the lead was doubled as Rogan  and O'Leary combined to make the scoreline 2-0 in favour of the home side, and despite dominating possession the Enniscorthy men were unable to extend their lead before the interval.

The second half was one-way traffic as the hosts upped the pressure on the Newbridge goal. Seb Rynhart made it 3-0 after intercepting a wayward pass out of defence before netting following a one-on-one with the Newbridge goalkeeper. He grabbed his second on 35 minutes when Dunne brought the ball into the semi-circle, passing dangerously close to the goal, and Rynhart made the most of the opportunity.

Dunne produced a near carbon-copy of his first goal on 37 minutes to put four goals between the sides, and Rogan bagged his second of the afternoon three minutes later from a penalty corner. Rynhart claimed the short corner after deflecting the ball off a Newbridge foot; Rogan received the push-back and hammered the ball into the backboard.

The seventh arrived via a piece of magic from Gavin Cousins. Rogan in possession passed the ball to the edge of the semi-circle, where it was received by Cousins; his single touch nudged the ball over two Newbridge sticks into the path of Rynhart, who shot into the bottom right.

While the goalscorers could justifiably claim the limelight, Sunday's success was based on a strong performance throughout the squad. Goalkeeper and captain Glenn Rothwell was left with little to do as his defenders- Andrew Stewart, Jack Doran, Harry Somers, Ronan O'Leary, Samuel Veitch and Rynhart- worked tirelessly to keep Newbridge at bay. In midfield the aggression of Gavin Cousins was instrumental in unsettling the visitors, who also had to contend with the skill of Rogan and the industry of Alex Symes and John Sutton. Up front Evan Jacob worked tirelessly all afternoon, seeking out his teammates with a flurry of crosses from the right, and Leo Durnan and Conor O'Brien battled hard to prevent Newbridge clearing their lines.

After their fine league win, cup action beckons for Enniscorthy, who host Dublin giants Monkstown (competing in upper reaches of the Leinster A division) on March 20th in what promises to be a challenging encounter.

Enniscorthy Squad: G Rothwell; S Rynhart; A Stewart; J Doran; H Somers; R O'Leary; G Cousins; S Veitch; J Sutton; E Jacob; C Dunne; C O'Brien; L Durnan; A Symes; P Rogan

Four goals for Enniscorthy 1st men

For the second week in succession, Enniscorthy's first-choice eleven scored four goals- and secured all three points- following a 4-1 win over St. James' Gate on Saturday.

Donal Doyle's side entered the contest mindful of the previous league meeting between the two sides, when the Dubliners emerged with a 1-0 win when the Wexford men arguably deserved victory. The opening five minutes of Saturday's contest showed that the outcome this time would be decidedly different. Forward Edmundas Liuikimas from the off was making life difficult for the 'Gate defence, forcing two penalty corners before linking up with Liam Jowett, who fired the home side ahead inside ten minutes.

Despite this bright start, and being well ahead in the possession stakes, Enniscorthy were unable to take further advantage in the first half.  There were some encouraging signs, however; Andrew Rothwell made a series of sweeping moves from deep in the heart of the defence, linking up well with Clive Rothwell, while David Simmons in midfield was a constant threat to the visitors, pressing forward at every opportunity.

The second half saw the cathedral town side exert ever-increasing pressure on the visiting side, and this time they got their just reward. Daithí Medcalf doubled the lead with an impressive strike after acting as first receiver from a penalty corner, while the points were secured a few minutes later when Maguire and Costello picked the pockets of a 'Gate defender; Costello then surged into the semi-circle and fired over the advancing 'keeper.

The Dublin side then went through somewhat of a purple patch of their own, securing a flurry of penalty corners, through which 'Gate pegged a goal back, but just over ten minutes later Maguire restored Enniscorthy's three-goal cushion, when he scored after finding himself in a one-on-one with the 'Gate goalkeeper.

Enniscorthy's win secures their status in division 5 for next season with three matches to go. The cathedral town side, though, do not intend on sitting on these particular laurels, with captain Graham Hill demanding of his players that they treat each one like a cup final. Next up for Enniscorthy is a trip to Rathgar on Saturday in what promises to be another intriguing encounter.

Enniscorthy Squad: Graham Hill; Andrew Rothwell; Clive Rothwell; Keith Ogilvie; Martyn Veitch; Glenn Chapman; David Simmonds; Daithí Medcalf; Liam Jowett; Edmundas Liuikimas; Roy Chapman; Niall Maguire; Kieran Costello.
