So near and yet so far

So near and yet so far. Fraser Rothwell's men came agonisingly close to securing a league and cup double at The Maws on Saturday, but fell to a rare defeat against North Kildare in the Walters Cup final.

The Maws has not been a happy hunting ground for Enniscorthy's men; in their sole previous visit to the Kilcock venue the Slaneysiders departed on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline. On that occasion the Wexford men were seriously depleted, whereas this time round Fraser Rothwell could pick from a much stronger side, though without defenders Martyn Veitch and Keith Ogilvie. Graham Hill lined out in goal; in front of him were Andrew Rothwell, Clive Rothwell, P. J. Pierce, as well as Greg Hawkins, who had been in impressive form of late at training. Ó Suilleabháin and the Chapman brothers- Roy and Glenn- took up midfield berths while Medcalf, Jowett, and Jason Rothwell provided the attacking threat.

North Kildare began by pinning Enniscorthy back inside their 23 metre line, not giving their opponents any time to settle. Inside two minutes the home side won their first short corner which was, however, dealt with by the Enniscorthy defence. A minute later, though, the hosts claimed the lead. Mark Seery received the ball at the edge of the Enniscorthy semi- circle; taking the ball forward, he then sent it high into the top corner of Hill's net. Following this stunning strike, Enniscorthy switched to a 4-4-2 formation from 4-3-3, Medcalf making way for David Simmons. This seemed to settle the side, and soon after the division 7 champions had the chance to equalise when their first foray into the North Kildare semi- circle resulted in a short corner. Glenn Chapman, though, mis-trapped the push-out from Clive Rothwell and the chance was lost.

Enniscorthy fought their way back into the game, and what developed was a match full of end to end action, both sides making light of the rain which fell throughout the afternoon. Liam Jowett was a livewire in the Enniscorthy attack, while the midfield put in a typically hardworking performance. David Simmons had to be replaced shortly before half time having sustained an eye injury which required stitches over his left eye. The second half saw the visitors gain the upper hand in terms of possession and Trevor Gillis in the North Kildare goal was by far the busier of the two goalkeepers, producing two fine saves within four minutes, ten minutes after the restart to deny the Enniscorthy attack. The visitors battered the home defence; long, high aerial balls from Clive Rothwell placed the Kildare men under immediate pressure, while strong running from Jason Rothwell and Jowett threatened to tear open the defence on occasion. At times the Wexford men were their own worst enemies, giving possession away cheaply against the side which claimed the division 6 title this season, but stout defending at the back prevented North Kildare from extending their lead. Enniscorthy, though, were unable to unlock the host defence and North Kildare claimed Walters Cup honours on a 1-0 scoreline, having been defeated in the final last season.

Squad: Graham Hill; Andrew Rothwell; Greg Hawkins; P. J. Pierce; Clive Rothwell; Roy Chapman; Glenn Chapman; Cathal Ó Suilleabháin; Daithí Medcalf; Liam Jowett; Jason Rothwell; Robbie Walshe; David Simmons; Kieran Costello; Seamus McAlister; Ivan Rothwell; Jonathon Rothwell.

Two goals from inspirational captain Clive Rothwell- one a first half penalty flick- saw Enniscorthy's men clinch a first ever cup final appearance at Rathdown School on Sunday.

Following an energy- sapping league victory over Mullingar II the day before, the Slaneysiders travelled to south Dublin seeking a first win over Monkstown V as well as the ultimate prize, an appearance in the Walters Cup decider. Having drawn 0-0 in their previous encounter with 'Town, Fraser Rothwell's men rightly anticipated a close affair. The opening stages saw Monkstown have the greater share of possession but were unable to break down a stubborn Enniscorthy defence. Once again Roy Chapman was in impressive form in central midfield, while brother Glenn put in an equally valuable shift in the left midfield berth. Ten minutes in the blue had the ball in the back of Graham Hill's net, but the effort was ruled out as contact had not been made with the ball inside the Enniscorthy semi- circle. Instead it was the Wexford men who took the lead, Daithí Medcalf's pass finding Roy Chapman whose goal- bound shot was stopped on the line by a foot belonging to a Monkstown defender. A similar instance the day before had only seen a short corner being awarded, but this time umpire Tommy Doyle indicated a penalty flick. Clive Rothwell made no mistake, sending it high into the top left corner of the net: one- nil to the visitors.

At the break Enniscorthy narrowly retained the lead but the mood in the camp was positive. That confidence took a knock, however, ten minutes after the restart as Monkstown finally equalised. The south Dublin side had started the new half strongly, pinning Enniscorthy deep inside their own half. 'Town earned a free on the 23- metre line as they attacked down the right, and the resulting shot found a Monkstown player lurking dangerously close to Hill's goal. The contact took the ball over the diving Enniscorthy 'keeper and deadlock had resumed.

Both sides stepped up their efforts as Enniscorthy sought to regain the lead and Monkstown a second goal which would put them ahead for the first time. The visitors were unable to place the Monsktown goal under sustained pressure and instead relied on counter- attacks and set- piece situations for shots on target. Indeed, it was from such an effort that the winner arrived, with fifteen minutes left on the clock. Jowett dribbled forward into the Monkstown semi- circle when umpire Peter Agnew spotted an infringement and awarded a short corner. Clive Rothwell injected the ball, pushing it out to Cathal Ó Suilleabháin. In the teeth of the onrushing defence, the Corkman returned it to Rothwell, and his effort found the net.

As the minutes ticked by, Enniscorthy put in a huge defensive effort in order to secure their place in the final. As part of this, the visitors switched from a 4-3-3 formation to 4-4-2, leaving Jowett and Costello to harry the Monkstown defence on the rare occasions when Enniscorthy were able to break out of their own half. At the back, Ogilvie and Veitch, in particular, were tenacious in the tackle, and Ó Suilleabháin covered a huge amount of ground in order to keep the blues at bay. A succession of green cards were handed out in the closing stages to both sides as tempers flared and tensions rose. Enniscorthy, though, held out and now have their first cup final to look forward to.

Squad: Graham Hill; Keith Ogilvie; Clive Rothwell; Martyn Veitch; P. J. Pierce; Andrew Rothwell; Cathal Ó Suilleabháin; Roy Chapman; Glenn Chapman; Kieran Costello; Robbie Walshe; Daithí Medcalf; Liam Jowett; Jason Rothwell.

Finishing Division 7 with a win!

12/4/2015

Enniscorthy passed an extremely stern test at the Astro Active Centre on Saturday, as their 2-1 win over a skilful Mullingar side kept their two- year unbeaten home record intact on the last day of the league season.

The midlands side arrived in the cathedral town with a mathematical chance of gaining promotion, as a high- scoring victory over the hosts would see them leapfrog Monkstown into second place. Their intent was clear from the off, as the visitors piled on the pressure. Most of their attacks were focused on the centre and Enniscorthy's right, and defenders Keith Ogilvie, Clive Rothwell and Ivan Rothwell were particularly busy warding off the waves of Mullingar attacks. The Slaneysiders best chances came on the break, with fast moves up the right wing proving troublesome for the Westmeath club. Robbie Walshe's lob of the 'keeper went over the bar, as did an effort from Glenn Chapman; Andrew Rothwell had a goal disallowed, and a subsequent Enniscorthy effort which was stopped on the line by a defender's foot only yielded a short corner; the lively Jowett came off second best in a one-on-one with goalkeeper Eoin Feeney. Mullingar had the possession, but Enniscorthy were more creative up front.

The visitors upped the ante on the restart, and a titanic struggle developed as both sides sought to break the deadlock. Again Mullingar were the dominant force, Holger Marl in particular asking questions of the home defence. Graham Hill in the Enniscorthy goal had to be constantly on the alert, and pulled off a string of saves to deny the visitors but there was little he could do to stop the Mullingar opener. "I thought when the goal went in our heads would drop", mused captain Clive Rothwell after the final whistle, but his side refused to lie down. Instead they took the fight to the midlands side, dominating possession in a fifteen minute spell midway through the second half, which yielded two goals.

The first was the result of a short corner; Clive Rothwell pushed the ball to the top of the semi- circle where it was met by Ó Suilleabháin. His mis-hit effort fooled Feely and the league champions had their equaliser. Buoyed by the score, Enniscorthy then went in search of the lead. The hosts were able to benefit from a poor hit-out by Mullingar, Jowett winning the race to the ball. Driving forward into the visitors semi- circle, he released the ball left to McAlister as the former was quickly closed down by the Mullingar defence. McAlister steadied himself, and his shot bobbled past Feely and over the line.

The last ten minutes of the match was a desperate affair: Mullingar frantically seeking a way through a ferocious Enniscorthy defence, and the home side battling to keep them out. Long clearances upfield were a temporary relief for the home side, as Mullingar fought right to the end, but the Wexford men held out to claim all three points and end the league season on a high.

Squad: Graham Hill; Ivan Rothwell; Keith Ogilvie; P. J. Pierce; Clive Rothwell; Andrew Rothwell; Glenn Chapman; Roy Chapman; Cathal Ó Suilleabháin; Robbie Walshe; Liam Jowett; Nick Peare; Martin Veitch; Kieran Costello; Rory Maguire; Greg Hawkins; Seamus McAlister.
