Enniscorthy Ladies’ Hockey celebrated a sensational win in their first league game against Gorey, made all the sweeter after a years absence from the South East league. Following a cagey start, with initial pressure from Gorey, the Enniscorthy ladies fought back in style securing a 9-0 victory.

Ten minutes in, captain Lisa Frayne took a great ball from Leah Chapman scoring the opening goal of the match, boosting Enniscorthy’s confidence. Sonja Rynhart’s first of two goals then came eight minutes later.  Goals for Enniscorthy then started coming thick and fast, with two goals from vice captain Deirdre Kehoe in the 20th and 21st minutes, the first from a short corner and the second in general play. Enniscorthy ladies kept the pressure on right up until half time forcing a short corner in search of a fifth goal but to no avail. The home side lead 4-0 at the break.

Gorey came out strong in the start of the second half, Julie Watchorn racing back in a 3-on-1 to bring a halt to Gorey’s attack. The early stages of the half also saw Enniscorthy lose defender Nancy Dunphy to injury. However, this setback failed to halt the home side's drive. Sonja Rynhart soon found the back of the net for a second time with a spectacular backhanded flick into the top right corner of the Gorey goal. Shortly after, a precisely angled ball fed across a congested circle by Deirdre Kehoe was picked up and finished by Gemma Kelly. After previous close attempts, Leah Chapman made a delicately weighed chip over the diving Gorey 'keeper, making it 7-0. Sweeper Molly Boyne, up to support the attack for a short corner, deflected Deirdre Kehoe’s shot, sneaking the ball by the keeper. With two minutes to spare, Deirdre Kehoe completed her hat trick with a skilful flick into the back of the net.

Enniscorthy 1sts aim to maintain their winning momentum in their next league encounter against Kilkenny 2nds on Sunday 4th October at 10:30 in Astro Active, Enniscorthy, while Enniscorthy 2nds will also be playing their league opener against Wexford 1sts.

Enniscorthy squad; Fiona Rothwell, Molly Boyne, Katie Owen, Eleanor Bolger, Leah Chapman, Serena Hatton, Laura O’Leary, Gemma Kelly, Deirdre Kehoe (VC), Sonja Rynhart, Lisa Frayne (C) , Emma Doyle, Nancy Dunphy, Julie Watchorn, Lisa Tyghe, Jessie Flood.

Three years and 2 teams, the future's bright

Enniscorthy's second string men suffered a 2-0 defeat against a very experienced Three Rock Rovers side at the Astro Active Centre on Saturday.

The home side found the going difficult in the opening period as the south Dublin side took a hold on the game at midfield, and indeed had an excellent opportunity foiled on 20 minutes when a goal-bound effort from a short corner was blocked by the onrushing Costello.

At the interval the game was finely balanced at 0-0, and following some personnel switches Enniscorthy shifted proceedings in their favour, but it was the visitors who got the opening goal, Chris Steele scoring.

The Wexford side were finally able to exert pressure on the visiting defence and produce a series of short corners, with midfielder Mick Jordan and forward Robbie Walshe causing plenty of problems, while Alan Smith at centre midfield provided plenty of industry. However, they could find no way through a well- marshalled Rovers defence.

Minutes from the end 'Rock struck again, a long downfield pass finding Simon Walker, who outfoxed Greg Hawkins and squeezed the ball into the bottom left corner past Luke Doyle in the Enniscorthy net.

Squad: Luke Doyle; Mark Jowett; Ivan Rothwell; Greg Hawkins; P.J. Pierce; Kieran Costello; Alan Smith; Mick Jordan; Robbie Walshe; Nick Peare; Rory Maguire; Fraser Rothwell; David Mulligan; Jack Redmond; John Murphy.

A great challenge to start the season

Enniscorthy's first eleven fought back twice to claim a 2-2 draw against Clontarf on the opening day of the Leinster league division 5 at a sunny Astro Active Centre on Saturday.

Clontarf made their first trip to Enniscorthy and were determined to mete out a rude welcome to division 5 to the Wexford side. Indeed, the visitors started the brighter, seemingly able to pin Enniscorthy deep into their own half at will, though Glenn Chapman had an early opportunity when he threaded his way into the Clontarf semi- circle. Just before the half- hour mark Keith Ogilve made an important deflection from a well- hit Clontarf shot, putting the ball out for a long corner, and on 32 minutes Graham Hill had to be quick off the blocks to deny the visiting attack with a well timed kick save.

The visitors took the lead just a minute later following an uncharacteristic error by 'keeper Hill, who slipped in the semi- circle while attempting to kick the ball away, and this gave a nearby Clontarf attacker the opportunity to pounce.

The home side improved greatly after the break, coach Donal Doyle with some tough words for his charges whose game lacked width and imagination. On 39 minutes came Enniscorthy's best chance of the game so far when Ó Suilleabháin fired a shot from the left outer edge of the semi- circle; it outpaced the onrushing Jonathon Rothwell and hit the post before going wide.

The equaliser came on 44 minutes courtesy of two of Enniscorthy's talented youngsters, Daithí Medcalf and Liam Jowett. The latter battled his way through the Clontarf cover on the left wing, before cutting in to the top of the semi- circle, where he met the onrushing Clontarf goalkeer. A quick ball to the left found Medcalf, who calmly slotted home to the delight of the home supporters.

Despite last year's division 7 champions upping the tempo, once again it was the visitors who claimed the lead. An Enniscorthy attack up the left broke down in midfield, and Clontarf took full advantage, swiftly pushing up the pitch and creating a four on two overlap. Poor defensive work lead to a series of missed tackles and the Clontarf centre forward made no mistake.

Mindful of their proud home record, the Wexford men poured forward in search of a second, and Enniscorthy grabbed an equaliser with just minutes to go. Following some excellent attacking play, the hosts won a rare short corner and in the ensuing melée, David Simmons struck for a well deserved goal.

Squad: Graham Hill; Andrew Rothwell; Keith Ogilvie; Martyn Veitch; Cathal Ó Suilleabháin; Roy Chapman; Glenn Chapman; Daithí Medcalf; Liam Jowett; David Simmons; Jonathon Rothwell; Niall Maguire; William Durnan.

2015/16 Season Preview

With the end of summer, a new season begins: the hockey season. Enniscorthy Hockey Club has an exciting year ahead, particularly in the adult section, as its women’s team makes a welcome return to the South East League after a year’s absence, while the men will be entering a second team into the Leinster League.

The women’s team, coached by Carmel Maguire and Ivanna Yeats, returns to league action with a home encounter against Carlow on September 20th. Familiar foes Gorey, Wexford and Kilkenny make up the rest of the opposition. Like the rest of the club, all home matches will take place at Enniscorthy's Astro Active Centre.

Over in the men’s section, new coach and Ferns resident Donal Doyle has been putting his charges through their paces with a thorough pre-season programme that features upcoming friendlies against Waterford, St. James’ Gate and local rivals Wicklow. Like Enniscorthy, Wicklow have maintained a sustained charge through the leagues, capturing division 7 and 8 honours in successive seasons. With the leagues having been reorganised to create an elite, all-island division with the provincial leagues acting as feeders, the clubs – an hour apart up the N11- meet in the league for the first time, in division 5.

There are a few other familiar names who will rub shoulders with the Enniscorthy men: North Kildare (who narrowly defeated the Wexford side in the 2014-5 Walters Cup final), St. Brendan’s Phoenix Park, St. James’ Gate, along with Rathgar, Clontarf, Avoca, and Suttonians. For the first time, Enniscorthy will be taking on other club first- choice selections in what should prove to be a challenging season. After their Walters Cup win, North Kildare will surely be aiming to capture additional silverware, while Suttonians (having dropped from division two to five early last season) will also pose a stern test.

The newly-formed men’s second team will ply their trade for the 2015-16 season in division seven. The presence of Wicklow’s second team means there will be at least four N11 derbies this season, while Bray (further along the route), St James’ Gate, St. Brendan’s Phoenix Park, YMCA, Dublin University, Pembroke Wanderers, Navan, Three Rock Rovers and North Kildare make up the rest of the league.

Opening fixtures:
- Women Carlow (H) 20 September; Gorey (A) 27 September; Kilkenny (H) 4 October; Wexford (A) 11 October

- Men I Clontarf (H) 26 September; North Kildare (A) 3 October; St. Brendan’s Phoenix Park (H) 17 October; Suttonians (A) 31 October

- Men II Three Rock Rovers (H) 26 September; Navan (A) 3 October; Wicklow (H) 17 October; Dublin University (A) 24 October
