men -  The third match: Corinthians IV - Cup

Enniscorthy's men claimed their first major scalp of the season as they defeated Corinthians IV following a titanic struggle in the first round of the division eight cup at the town's Astro Active Centre on Sunday, October 20th.

A penalty flick from defender Clive Rothwell deep into the second period of added time sealed victory for the hosts against the reigning cup holders. It was a result Enniscorthy- wearing unfamiliar black- richly deserved after a dominant second half performance marked by a tremendous will to win and some impressive interplay.

Things did not go entirely to plan for the first-time entrants to the competition as Corinthians ratcheted up the pressure early on. Right back Andrew Rothwell had a busy opening half defensively but managed to produce a number of encouraging runs forward also. The pace of Jason Rothwell on the right wing was proving problematic for the reds but Enniscorthy were unable to convert possession into attempts on goal. Instead it was the visitors who were creating chances after forcing a number of short corners; left back Kieran Costello narrowly deflecting one such dangerous effort wide. A short corner soon after, however, found the net, the Corinthians attack finding a gap between the onrushing Enniscorthy defence and goalkeeper Graham Hill.

Corinthians, however, failed to push on and instead it was the underdogs who seized the initiative, Niall Maguire and Robbie Walshe coming close with a number of efforts. At the half time interval Enniscorthy manager Fraser Rothwell opted for three up front and this had the desired effect, with his side dominating second half possession. Ó Suilleabháin and Glenn Chapman, operating centrally were busily snuffing out Corinthians forward momentum, while ferocious defending meant only one short corner was conceded in the second period. As the half progressed, visitors goalkeeper David Harkin was all that stood between Enniscorthy and an equaliser. A shot across goal by Roy Chapman, deflected in by the Corinthians defence eventually brought the hosts level, much to the relief of the enthusiastic home support.

Their team scented victory and piled forward. There was no way through, however, and extra time loomed. Both sides were visibly tiring, especially Enniscorthy following their scoreless draw with St Brendan’s Phoenix Park the day before. Still, both sides worked frantically in defence and attack, producing a thrilling finale for the spectators.

Robbie Walshe, moving dangerously in on goal, found his way blocked by Harkin lying on the ball. Umpire Robert Syme indicated a penalty flick which Clive Rothwell calmly converted. A few nervous, frantic minutes remained for the home side and their support- ers, but Enniscorthy hung on for an energy- sapping victory after eighty-five minutes of non-stop action.

Squad: Graham Hill; Roy Chapman; Glenn Chapman; Cathal Ó Suilleabháin; Niall Maguire; Rory Maguire; Jonathon Rothwell; Robbie Walshe; Andrew Rothwell; Jason Rothwell; Clive Rothwell; Keith Ogilvie; Kieran Costello; Greg Hawkins; Robbie Kavanagh; John Casey.

Men -  The second match: St. Brendan’s Phoenix Park II

Enniscorthy men remain unbeaten in the league following a draw with St. Brendan’s Phoenix Park on Saturday.

Both sides were short a number of players at a rain-swept Royal College of Surgeons ground in Santry, but it was the visitors who made the brighter start. Good interlinking play between Jason Rothwell and Robbie Walshe on the right was putting the hosts under pressure but the St. Brendan's defence were well equipped to prevent Enniscorthy from penetrating the semi- circle. Similarly, driving runs through the centre from midfield by Glenn Chapman and Jonathon Rothwell were causing difficulties for the men in blue. The Enniscorthy defence was once again in excellent form and the Dubliner's attack rarely threatened.

The second half told a different story. The mood in the Enniscorthy camp had been upbeat at the break and the team sensed blood. However, a mixture of St. Brendan's raising their game and an inability to adopt a more measured approach when in possession could have cost the Model County men dearly. Shots on target from Jason Rothwell and Rory Maguire were the bright spots in a half which yielded four short corners in quick succession for the hosts. Fortunately for Enniscorthy, St. Brendan's were ineffective in the shooting department while ferocious defending kept the blues at bay during a period of sustained pressure late in the game. Thanks to the hard work of the Enniscorthy backs and midfield, debutante goalkeeper John Casey was rarely called into action.

The match finished scoreless; Enniscorthy will feel that, on balance, it was two points lost rather than one gained. Cup holders Corinthians IV are Enniscorthy's next league opponents as they visit the Astro Active Centre next weekend.

Squad: John Casey; Rory Maguire; Keith Ogilvie; P.J. Pierce; Roy Chapman; Kieran Costello; Niall Maguire; Jonathon Rothwell; Glenn Chapman; Jason Rothwell; Seamus McAllister; Robbie Walshe.

Men - Season opener: Bray II

Niall Maguire scored two and Jonathon Rothwell one as the men of Enniscorthy Hockey Club got their league campaign off to a winning start on October 12th.

The Astro Active Centre at Bellefield hosted Enniscorthy Hockey Club's first ever men's Leinster league match, and the vocal home support was rewarded with an impressive debut performance. From tip-off, the Enniscorthy midfield quartet of Jonathon Rothwell, Cathal Ó Suilleabháin, Glenn Chapman and Niall Maguire kept their Bray opponents firmly under control. Ó Suilleabháin in particular provided valuable cover for the Enniscorthy defence while Chapman and Niall Maguire proved a constant threat moving forward. Diagonal passes to Jason Rothwell, operating on the right side of attack were causing all sorts of problems for Bray and the visitors eventually conceded a penalty flick. Greg Hawkins sent the goalkeeper the wrong way but the ball flashed narrowly wide. Niall Maguire broke the dead- lock to leave the hosts one up at the break; the gap would have been greater but for a goal by Jason Rothwell being disallowed.

Fraser Rothwell's half-time team talk seemed to do the trick as Enniscorthy emerged a much more composed team for the second half. Hawkins made way for Robbie Walshe and this added a different dimension to the home attack. Maguire's performance steadily improved and his work was rewarded with a second. Walshe and Jason Rothwell were keeping the Bray net minder Tony Cooper busy and he was forced into a number of spectacular saves. Long aerials from Clive Rothwell were put- ting Bray under pressure and increasingly effective interplay made a third inevitable.

Jonathon Rothwell eventually made it 3-0 after a feverish goalmouth scramble. This was the final score in a game which Enniscorthy had dominated- goalkeeper Graham Hill scarcely had a save to make and no short corners were conceded. For the younger members of the squad it was a valuable experience; all will be encouraged by the result.

Squad: Graham Hill; Andrew Rothwell; Clive Rothwell; John Casey; Kieran Costello; Jonathon Rothwell; Cathal Ó Suilleabháin; Glenn Chapman; Niall Maguire; Jason Rothwell; Greg Hawkins; Seamus McAllister; Chris St. Clair-Johnson; Rory Maguire; Robbie Walshe.
