men -  The sixth match: Navan II

Enniscorthy's men continued their winning ways at King's Hospital on Saturday, defeating Navan on a 3-0 scoreline. Enniscorthy, debuting their Millstream Fish sponsored jersies, were without the services of Graham Hill, Cathal Ó Suilleabháin, Chris St. Clair-Johnson and the battling Edmundas Liukimas. Navan were similarly affected, not even having the regulation eleven starters.

Despite this, the Slaneysiders started brightest, Robbie Walshe taking advantage of the additional space at the back to net inside the second minute.

Another player taking advantage of Enniscorthy's numerical superiority was Jason Rothwell on the right wing, making a series of storming runs down the sideline. Throughout the first half, his runs and crosses were putting the Badger's defence under sever pressure. Despite this, the Enniscorthy attack was unable to convert from open play until late in the half, Niall Maguire slotting in to make it 3-0. This followed an unstoppable Jason Rothwell strike from a short corner midway through the opening period.

The half-time message from manager Fraser Rothwell was simple:  play  your own game. Overall, the first half performance had been acceptable, but there had been nervous moments as Navan had been allowed play their way back into the game as the half wore on

This pattern continued into the second half and the Enniscorthy defence- Clive Rothwell and Keith Ogilvie providing especially stout resistance- continued to hold firm. Up front Jason Rothwell continued tormenting the Navan defence but Enniscorthy only had a number of near misses to show for their efforts. The match ended with the dangerous Shane Dooley of Navan on the attack but unable to penetrate the Enniscorthy goal; the visitors had deservedly won.

A tough weekend follows for the Astro Active Centre side. Mid-table North Kildare visit Enniscorthy in the league on Saturday, while the following day the Wexford men make the long trip to Serpentine Avenue to take on Pembroke Wanderers in the quarter final of the Leinster Minor Cup.

Squad: John Casey; Andrew Rothwell; Keith Ogilvie; Clive Rothwell; Kieran Costello; Jonathon Rothwell; Roy Chapman; Glenn Chapman; Jason Rothwell; Rory Maguire; Robbie Walshe; Niall Maguire; Greg Hawkins; Seamus McAllister

Enniscorthy Hockey Club men maintained their lead at the top of Leinster league Division 8 following a resounding 4-1 victory away to Dublin giants Pembroke Wanderers on Saturday.

Manager Fraser Rothwell had called for an improved away performance after the frustrating draw with St. Brendan’s Phoenix Park II and his charges delivered with interest. From the off Enniscorthy looked the more likely to goal as new recruit Edmundas Liukimas's physicality was causing problems for the home defence. The Wanderers' midfield and attack were dangerous on the counter and the Enniscorthy defence, well marshalled by Cathal Ó Suilleabháin, had to be alert. Three first half short corners were effectively dealt with by the league's best defence. As the half wore on, Enniscorthy began to turn the screw and their efforts were rewarded when a goal line infringement resulted in a penalty flick which Clive Rothwell converted. Hungry for more, the visitors continued to harass the opposition defence. Glenn and Roy Chapman, along with Jonathon Rothwell, were impressive at midfield, and they linked very effectively with Ó Suilleabháin moving forward. Glenn Chapman improved the scoreline to 2-0 and an own goal made it 3-0 at the break.

Half-time switches saw a preference for youth over experience as John Casey and Robbie Kavanagh slotted into defence instead of Andrew Rothwell and Ó Suilleabháín; Casey's man-marking would leave his opponent without a touch for the remainder of the game. Jason Rothwell was also introduced and his runs up the right wing, combining with Chris St. Clair-Johnson stretched the Pembroke defence. As the second half continued there were several anxious moments for the Enniscorthy defence as the hosts were able to slice through midfield; goalkeeper Graham Hill was having a busier game than he was perhaps used to.

A fourth goal- from Niall Maguire- finally put the game beyond reach but there was still time for a goal to cheer the home support. A sideline ball from the right was quickly passed across the Enniscorthy semi-circle and converted at the left post, breaking Hill's previously impregnable goal.

Enniscorthy now enjoy a weekend off before facing Railway Union at the Astro Active Centre, pencilled in for November 23.

Squad: Graham Hill; Andrew Rothwell; Cathal Ó Suilleabháin; Clive Rothwell; Kieran Costello; Jonathon Rothwell; Glenn Chapman; Roy Chapman; Seamus McAllister; Edmundas Liukimas; Chris St. Clair- Johnson; Niall Maguire; Robbie Kavanagh; Robbie Walshe; Jason Rothwell; John Casey.

men -  The fourth match: Corinthians IV

Jonathon Rothwell and Roy Chapman scored as Enniscorthy's men defeated Corinthians IV on Saturday at a windy Astro Active Centre.

After their Leinster Minor Cup defeat to Enniscorthy, the Dubliners made the long trip to Slaneyside for this league encounter with revenge in mind. It was the hosts, however, who started the brighter. Just two minutes had elapsed when Enniscorthy were awarded a penalty flick by umpire David Howard. Cup hero Clive Rothwell trekked up from defence but his effort was confidently saved by David Harkin.

Despite this setback, Enniscorthy refused to be deterred and maintained pressure on the red's goal. Niall Maguire on the left wing and Jason Rothwell on the right were making threatening forays into their opponents 25. The Corinthians defence, though, were able to cope well with the home attack in open play. The answer for Fraser Rothwell's men came in the form of short corners. Their previous meeting had seen Corinthians score from one such set play- the Wexford team's only concession in league or cup this season. On this occasion the home team returned the favour. A short corner push out by Jonathon Rothwell was swiftly returned to him in a pre-rehearsed move, waiting close to goal. Turning quickly, he slipped the ball into the back of the net.

Corinthians went in search of an equaliser and the ensuing pressure resulted in two short corners. Their momentum faltered, however, when a clearance from Enniscorthy's Keith Ogilvie resulted in an injury to one of his opponents, resulting in a halt being called to the match for several minutes. The home team took the opportunity to regroup, and saw out the rest of the half with ease.

After the break the hosts began strongly but manager Fraser Rothwell will be concerned with what followed. The balance of the game swung in Corinthians favour as Enniscorthy lost cohesion. Clearances from the home defence were being swiftly returned by the visitors; a mix of luck and strong tackling kept the reds at bay. The process would then begin anew, and there were several nervous moments for the hardy home support who had braved the elements.

A rare foray into the Corinthian’s half brought victory for Enniscorthy, Roy Chapman firing in with just over fifteen minutes to go. The result leaves the Enniscorthy men top of the table, with a tricky away match at Dublin giants Pembroke Wanderers next on the agenda. Sports writers often reflect that the mark of a good team is one where it carves out a win despite playing badly. If so, perhaps we are seeing the emergence of such an outfit.

Squad: Graham Hill; Rory Maguire; Robbie Walshe; Jonathon Rothwell; Chris St. Clair- Johnson; Jason Rothwell; Roy Chapman; Cathal Ó Suilleabháin; Niall Maguire; Robbie Kavanagh; John Casey; Andrew Rothwell; Keith Ogilvie; Clive Rothwell; Kieran Costello.
