Silverware for Enniscorthy U14 Girls

Enniscorthy's under 14 girls made history on Friday night by winning the West Leinster Plate, securing the club's first silverware at this age level.

The girls from Slaneyside went into the clash at the Astro Active Centre against Carlow on the back of a 6-0 away win over Tullamore.

In front of a large crowd under floodlights, it was Carlow who started the stronger and the girls in blue won a short corner inside two minutes. However good work by runner Aoife Mahon, ably assisted by defenders Sophie Gillot, Katie Sutton and Laura Smith, successfully disrupted the Carlow attack and Enniscorthy were able to clear their lines. The initial stages of the half saw the visiting side in the ascendant but they were unable to trouble Alice Medcalf in the Enniscorthy side's goal. Midfielders Ciara Kelly, Eve Furlong and defender Orla May Culhane worked hard to defend the Carlow attacks. Instead it was Enniscorthy who created the first real chance of the game, Aoife Mernagh shooting wide after seven minutes. The remainder of the half saw a real ding-dong battle develop, with both sides moving the ball up the pitch with purpose and conviction. Niamh Ogilvie and Eimear Doyle were introduced in attack and with Elaine Quigley up front they started to cause Carlow problems. Carlow's second short corner of the half came from a defensive error following an Enniscorthy hit-out, but again the back line stood firm. On 15 minutes Enniscorthy finally found the Carlow net, Niamh Ogilvie goaling following a scramble deep inside their opponent's semi- circle.

Susannah Doyle was introduced in midfield and Eabha Farell brought on in defence and they helped to keep the score line 1-0 at the break. But Carlow looked to have taken more from their team talk, as the first seven minutes of the new half saw the Enniscorthy defence put under severe pressure. The Carlow attack earned two short corners and separately shot two wides in this spell. The door creaked, but did not open. Alice Medcalf's save at point- blank range was, perhaps, the turning point of the game and provided a tremendous boost for Enniscorthy players and supporters alike. The siege was lifted, Riodhna Hourihane was introduced and once more the Enniscorthy girls took the game to their opponents

The sucker punch for Carlow arrived on 36 minutes; Ciara Kelly broke up the right side of midfield, then spotted Elaine Quigley diagonally to her left, who buried the ball into the top left corner. There was more drama left to come, as a mix- up in the Enniscorthy goalmouth finally earned Carlow the goal they craved. Alan Smith's side went in search of the winner immediately, but a drive up the field resulted in the ball going narrowly wide. With just five minutes left on the clock Hannah Sweeney made it 3-1, nicking the ball in at the far post after a cross from the right of the posts by Niamh Ogilvie. That proved to be the winner, and there were jubilant scenes under the rain at the final whistle.

This was an outstanding achievement for this Enniscorthy team, as it was comprised of sixth class and first year girls while most of their opponents would have girls that are in second year, many of whom also have schools hockey experience. Meaning the future is bright for Enniscorthy Hockey Club!

Enniscorthy squad: Alice Medcalf (gk), Katie Sutton, Sophie Gillot, Aoife Mahon, Orla May Culhane, Laura Smith (c), Eve Furlong, Ciara Kelly, Hannah Sweeney, Elaine Quigley (vc) Mernagh, Eimear Doyle, Niamh Oglivie, Susannah Doyle, Eabha Farell, Riodhna Hourihane.

Sunday was a very exciting day for the Enniscorthy U14 girls side who travelled to Tullamore early Sunday morning to take on the home side in the plate semi final. Having been dispatched from the cup competition by the toss of a coin they were determined to make a statement in the plate competition! This, they duly did as they hammered the home side 6-0.

The Enniscorthy girls have consistently improved week on week since the beginning of the season and are peaking at just the right time as there is now silverware to be won.

Their movement and passing was excellent, their tackling, their communication and their ability to take their goal scoring chances were top notch. Centre forward Elaine Quigley finished with a tally of four goals to her name. Laura Smith got a goal from midfield and Eimear Doyle got her debut goal for the U14's.

Every member of the squad was outstanding, but Aoife Mahon in defence, Ciara Kelly in midfield and Eimear Doyle and Niamh Ogilvie up front proved they can play at this level no problem!

The reward for this magnificent performance is a home plate final versus Carlow to played next weekend. The girls hope that all club members will come out in support and no matter what the result this has been a magnificent season for the U14 girls!!!

Also, thank you to Keith for umpiring and thank you to the parents who travelled to support. Hope to see you all at the final!!!

Team: Alice Medcalf (GK), Katie Sutton, Sophie Gillot, Aoife Mahon, Orla May Culhane, Laura Smith, Eve Furlong, Ciara Kelly, Elaine Quigley, Aoife Mernagh, Eimear Doyle (1st year), Niamh Ogilvie, Eimear Doyle (6th class)

A great game from our 1st yr Girls

Last Sunday saw Enniscorthy 1st year girls take on Newbridge away in the 2nd round of the West Leinster League. The level of performance from both teams was right up the scale and the girls played with great heart and passion.

Right from the tip off, both teams were alert and ready. As Newbridge began to press high up the pitch, defenders Katie Sutton, Sophie Gillot, Orla May Culhane, Aoife Mahon and Laura Smith did extremely well to clear any threatening shots on goal and keep the home team at bay. With Susannah Doyle, Aoife Mernagh and Ciara Kelly working hard in mid field, they created some great opportunities for forwards Hannah Sweeney, Elaine Quigley and Niamh Ogilvie but unfortunately none of these were converted, keeping the scores level going into the second half.

With a few positional changes Eimear Doyle (6th class), Rianna Hourihane and Emer Doyle (1st year) were introduced to the game. Play swung from end to end with some near misses for both teams and so full time score was 0-0.

In extra time, the girls showed amazing determination and heart and did not let an excellent Newbridge attack faze them. The game ended scoreless and it has been agreed by both Enniscorthy and Newbridge coaches that a replay will be scheduled for March 15th to decide which team will go through to the semi finals of the West Leinster League.

It was an outstanding performance by two evenly matched teams and the standard of hockey on display last Sunday was undisputedly top notch. The Enniscorthy girls put in a magnificent performance against a very strong 2nd year Newbridge side. Every Enniscorthy player put their heart and soul into this thrilling match and it was by far the best performance of the season!

Enniscorthy Squad: Katie Sutton, Sophie Gillot, Aoife Mahon, Orla May Culhane, Laura Smith, Susannah Doyle, Aoife Mernagh, Ciara Kelly, Eimear Doyle, Elaine Quigley, Hannah Sweeney, Niamh Ogilvie, Rianna Hourihane, Emer Doyle
