Enniscorthy Men become Division 7 champions

30/3/2015

Enniscorthy’s men are league champions again. Fraser Rothwell’s side claimed their second title in two seasons- and successive promotions- after a 5-1 demolition of Pembroke Wanderers V at the Astro Active Centre on Saturday.

In front of a large attendance the home side lined out with a familiar look, with just three changes from the side which defeated St. Brendan’s Phoenix Park the week before. Jonathon Rothwell began at right midfield instead of Costello, with Glenn Chapman on the left instead of the unavailable David Simmons. Up front Ó Suilleabháin started alongside Daithí Medcalf and Jason Rothwell.

There was little between the two sides in the opening exchanges, but Medcalf- son of journalist David- was unlucky not to open the scoring on eight minutes. Strong running from Roy Chapman found Jason Rothwell just inside the Wanderers semi- circle. He spotted the advancing Wanderers ‘keeper off his line and nudged the ball left to Medcalf, whose shot was cleared off the line. Brian Cleary in the Pembroke goal had to be quick off the mark to deny Jason Rothwell on 14 minutes, a pass through the centre finding Rothwell in space at the penalty spot, but the ‘keeper cleverly used his leg to block the shot from the Enniscorthy sharpshooter.

The initial goal, though, came less than thirty seconds later. Ó Suilleabháin received an Andrew Rothwell sideline ball on the right. Pushing forward, he spotted Jason Rothwell wide on the right, but his ball through was stopped by a phalanx of Pembroke defenders. Enniscorthy sent the ball back in from the left. Cleary and Jason Rothwell stormed out for it, Rothwell winning the race and nicking it past with a reverse shot from the penalty spot.

The large crowd had to wait until the 24th minute for the visitor’s first serious attack on the Enniscorthy goal. Martin Veitch was beaten by Marcus Blake on the right, who had spotted a team- mate lurking dangerously at the far post, but Graham Hill dived well to deny the Dublin 4 side. Enniscorthy were making all the running, and further scores seemed inevitable. Medcalf doubled the home side’s advantage and claimed his first of the day on 26 minutes. Midfielder Roy Chapman dispossessed Blake following a Pembroke hit- out; his short pass made it to Ó Suilleabháin. The Corkman spotted Medcalf to his left and he fired home from just inside the semi- circle.

Jason Rothwell brought his goal tally for the season to eight on the half- hour mark, smashing a well- aimed ball into the bottom left following a short corner. Three- nil up at the break, Enniscorthy just had to hold their nerve in the second half and the title would be theirs. West Thornton struck one back for the visitors with a wickedly dipping strike from a short corner on 41 minutes, the first home goal conceded by Enniscorthy this season.

Daithí Medcalf restored the three goal cushion soon after, scoring from a Costello cross on the right through a thicket of defenders to convert at the far post. His hat- trick, a sweetly- taken reverse strike on the left, capped a very satisfying day for Enniscorthy as they captured the league title.

Squad: Graham Hill; Andrew Rothwell; Keith Ogilvie; Martin Veitch; Clive Rothwell; Jonathon Rothwell; Roy Chapman; Glenn Chapman; Jason Rothwell; Cathal Ó Suilleabháin; Daithí Medcalf; Kieran Costello; Greg Hawkins; Robbie Walshe; Seamus McAlister.

Enniscorthy ground out a 1-0 win against St. Brendan's Phoenix Park on Saturday, opening a seven- point lead at the top of Leinster division seven and maintaining their unbeaten league run.

Mindful that any slip- up would allow second place Monkstown back into the title race, manager Fraser Rothwell named a strong starting side for the clash at a sun- kissed Astro Active Centre. Graham Hill took up his customary position in goal, with Andrew Rothwell, Clive Rothwell,  Keith Ogilvie and Martin Veitch making up the back four. There was a new- look midfield, as Kieran Costello found himself on the right, with Roy Chapman in the centre and David Simmons on the left. The changes continued up front, with Daithí Medcalf and Jason Rothwell joined by Glenn Chapman on his return from injury.

This was the home side's first competitive outing in a month, and the first half performance against the league's second from bottom side showed. It was a close, sometimes physical contest with a number of chances for both sides. Glenn Chapman had an early chance for the Wexford men; a free for the Dubliners close to the right- hand sideline was intercepted by Jason Rothwell, who spotted his team- mate inside the circle and away from the defensive cover. Though quickly closed down, Chapman got a shot in which was kicked away by the 'keeper.

The northside Dublin men then entered somewhat of a purple patch, their best chance coming when a cross from the left found a St. Brendan's forward unmarked in front of Graham Hill's goal. However, it overshot its intended recipient and Martin Veitch scrambling across was able to shepherd it wide. The men in red hit three further wides in this period and earned a long corner before Fraser Rothwell made a number of adjustments to settle the ship. Glenn Chapman made way for Liam Jowett, while Jonathon Rothwell came on for Costello.

Shortly before the break Enniscorthy's patience was rewarded with some sustained pressure on the St. Brendan's goal, which yielded two short corners and a long corner. While these yielded no results, a follow- up attack by the Slaneysiders displayed some serious intent. Simmons took a free on the left deep inside the St. Brendan's half, which found Medcalf just outside the circle. Dribbling at an angle, the FCJ Bunclody pupil spotted Jowett hovering close to the penalty spot. A pass to the left found his team- mate, who shot for goal but was denied by the swiftly advancing 'keeper.

The second half continued where the first left off, as Enniscorthy continued to dominate but found it difficult to break down a stubborn defence. The Dubliners were also dangerous on occasion; within the first five minutes of the half a break down the centre had to be scrambled over the sideline by Andrew Rothwell as the Wexford defence was badly stretched.

Still, the league leaders were in need of a goal- and eventually it came. Roy Chapman stole the ball in midfield, then passed diagonally left to his brother Glenn, who drove into the circle. He spotted Jowett to the left, who had spotted that the St. Brendan's keeper was off his line and had left the far post vulnerable. His shot was met by Costello who was able to nick the ball into the net and open his account for the club.

Further chances came for the home side, the best of which came from a Costello free close to the intersection of the right sideline and the endline. His ball found Roy Chapman at the edge of the circle; some quick thinking found Jowett in a similar position to that which resulted in the opening goal, but he was unable to get the deflection which would have made the points secure.

However, Enniscorthy held on for the deserved three points and await the visit of Pembroke Wanderers on Saturday.

Squad:
Graham Hill; P.J. Pierce; Keith Ogilvie; Clive Rothwell (c); Andrew Rothwell; David Simmons; Roy Chapman; Jonathon Rothwell; Jason Rothwell; Robbie Walshe; Kieran Costello; Ivan Rothwell; Liam Jowett; Martin Veitch; Glenn Chapman; Greg Hawkins; Rory Maguire; Nick Peare; Daithí Medcalf.

Liam Jowett struck with just over ten minutes remaining to seal all three points for Enniscorthy at a rain and wind- swept Astro Active Centre on Wednesday night.

The home side had gone into the match with a narrow lead at the top of division seven and were hoping to extend their lead against the league's basement side. Manager Fraser Rothwell deployed his side in a 4-3-3 formation, with Pierce, Clive Rothwell, Ogilvie and Andrew Rothwell defending Graham Hill's goal. Jonathon Rothwell, Roy Chapman, and David Simmons were deployed across midfield, while Jason Rothwell, Ó Suilleabháin and McAlister provided the attacking threat.

The opening salvoes of the encounter saw Enniscorthy push forward aggressively, and the 'Gate defence had to be alert to the dangers provided, in particular from Ó Suilleabháin, playing against his former club. Indeed it was the Corkman who opened the scoring, following a blizzard of shots on the visitor's goal by his team-mates. The lively home crowd could be forgiven for expecting a flurry of goals to follow- score difference could yet prove to be decisive in the final standings of the league- but instead the setback seemed to stiffen the Dubliner's resolve. Strong goalkeeping provided a platform for an improving away team effort; while the visitors never took control of proceedings, the men in green played their best hockey in the middle third of the first half. Good work from Pierce and Clive Rothwell, in particular, kept the Enniscorthy goal secure. Jason Rothwell was enduring a frustrating time as the Wexford men lacked quality in the final third, over- hitting passes and on occasion attempting to work the ball down field in an over- elaborate manner. The Dublin side earned a numebr of short corners but never seriously threatened Graham Hill's goal. Enniscorthy, though, were able to re-assert control by the end of the half.

'Gate began the new half in a rather unorthodox manner, sending a high aerial deep into the Enniscorthy defence, where it was claimed by Ogilvie. From an attacking point of view that was about as good as it got for the Crumlin side, as the hosts were totally dominant by the end of the contest. Their grip on the game was hardly affected by the loss of Symmonds to injury; Robbie Walshe replaced him. In the personnel reshuffle that followed, Jowett (who had replaced McAlister) took up station on the right side of midfield, with Walshe up front and Ó Suilleabháin slotted into a midfield berth. The league leaders became more confident on the break and an air of inevitability came over proceedings.

The second goal broke the visitors. A long ball from defence found Ó Suilleabháin, who laid off to Chapman. Looking up, he spotted Jason Rothwell on the right; the his pacy ball found Jowett in the semi-circle, who was able to fire past the 'Gate keeper. Shortly after, the increasingly confident Jowett had an excellent chance to make it 3-0. Finding himself alone and in plenty of space at the top of the semi- circle, he attempted a dazzling reverse shot but sent the ball over the bar.

So the dream lives on for Enniscorthy: top of division seven, with three games left to play - all at what has become somewhat of a fortress at the Astro Active Centre. The prospect of a second league title in two years, and promotion to division six, is there for the taking.

Enniscorthy Squad: Graham Hill; P.J. Pierce; Keith Ogilvie; Clive Rothwell (c); Andrew Rothwell; David Simmons; Roy Chapman; Jonathon Rothwell; Jason Rothwell; Seamus McAlister; Cathal Ó Suilleabháin; Robbie Walshe; Kieran Costello; Ivan Rothwell; Liam Jowett.

EHC men Vs Railway Union

1/2/2015

Enniscorthy's men maintain their lead at the top of Leinster division 7 after defeating Railway Union at a cool and blustery Park Avenue on Saturday. Their hosts had been somewhat of a bogey team in the past as the Wexford men had drawn and lost to the Sandymount side last year, but a resounding 5-0 home win in October meant that the table- toppers were hoping to do the double over Railway.

The visitors travelled up the N11 missing midfield players Glenn Chapman, Jonathon Rothwell and Liam Jowett, as well as defender Kieran Costello. As a result manager Fraser Rothwell was forced into a personnel reshuffle, moving Roy Chapman into the centre of midfield- covering for his brother Glenn- with Andrew Rothwell and David Simmons covering the right and left respectively. A slightly altered defensive line of Martyn Veitch, Clive Rothwell, Keith Ogilvie and P.J. Pierce lined out to help keep Graham Hill’s goal safe. Up front Jason Rothwell, Seamus McAlister and Cathal Ó Suilleabháin provided the attacking threat.

In the early stages of the first half Enniscorthy pushed hard down the right wing, testing Andrew Rothwell in his new position, but with the help of Jason Rothwell and Roy Chapman the pressure was put firmly on Railway Union's defence. The D4 side held strong and kept the visiting attack at bay. Mid way through the first half saw Enniscorthy break the deadlock with a great team goal from some flowing passes combining quick touches involving a number of Enniscorthy players. Simmons passed the ball wide to Jason Rothwell who pushed the ball across the D to the waiting McAlister who swept the ball past the Railway goalkeeper into the bottom left corner. One nil to the visitors. Shortly after the scoreline was doubled; Ó Suilleabháin pouncing on a ball after a save from the home 'keeper following a reverse flick shot from Andrew Rothwell.

At the whistle the visitors lead 2-0 after an energetic first half. The Dublin side got their chances in the second period, with a number of short corner efforts, but the Enniscorthy defence stayed solid . The Wexford men found themselves under considerable pressure but the visitors were able to maintain their hold on the game and held on for the win.

With four games left for the Slaneysiders- all at home- Enniscorthy are in a prime position to claim silverware for the second season running. The first of the four is this coming Saturday as they take on St. Brendans Phoenix Park II, hoping to take a step closer to the title.

Enniscorthy Squad: Graham Hill; P.J. Pierce; Keith Ogilvie; Clive Rothwell (c); Martyn Veitch; David Simmons; Roy Chapman; Andrew Rothwell; Jason Rothwell; Seamus McAlister; Cathal Ó Suilleabháin; Daithí Medcalf; Robbie Walshe; Greg Hawkins.

Senior Men - A close encounter for both sides

In one of the few matches to survive the weather, Enniscorthy travelled on Saturday to St. Andrew's College in Blackrock to take on Dublin giants Monkstown, and came away with a creditable point in a close encounter between two evenly matched sides.

The Slaneysiders travelled up the N11 with a strong outfit, missing only 'flu victim David Simmons and Greg Hawkins. Graham Hill returned in goal, while Andrew Rothwell, Keith Ogilvie, Clive Rothwell and Martyn Veitch started at the back. In midfield, manager Fraser Rothwell opted for Roy and Glenn Chapman, with Jonathon Rothwell operating on the left wing. Up front Jason Rothwell, Daithí Medcalf and Cathal Ó Suilleabháin provided the attacking threat.

The early exchanges saw Enniscorthy get two quick long corners but were unable to gain any advantage. This proved to be the blueprint for much of the first half as the visitors were the dominant side but unable to seriously threaten the Monkstown goal. The visitors, though, were making life relatively easy for Monkstown as their forays forward lacked width; Jason Rothwell was getting few opportunities to make his trademark runs down the right wing. Daithí Medcalf had an excellent opportunity to open the scoring, receiving a pass from Ó Suilleabháin from the right, to his position close to the Monkstown left post, but he fumbled his shot, and the home side escaped. Despite holding the balance of play, Enniscorthy had to be wary as the blues were dangerous on the counter- attack.

The warnings of Monkstown skill and attacking threat, obvious from their infrequent forays into the Enniscorthy semi- circle in the first half, grew more real after the break. The tables were turned as the hosts turned possession into sustained pressure on the Enniscorthy defence, and Ogilvie and Veitch, in particular, were kept busy. Hill was forced into a string of spectacular saves- the most notable keeping a ferocious drag flick out following a short corner for the hosts- in order to keep the scores level. As the half continued, Enniscorthy began to fight their way back into the game, while tension between both sets of players increased. Indeed, Monkstown were briefly down to ten men as umpire David Medcalf handed out a green card. The disparity in numbers, though, was all too brief, as Enniscorthy were unable to capitalise. Enniscorthy's cause was not helped by injuries to captain Clive Rothwell and Glenn Chapman, but the Wexford men held on. In fact, they had chances of their own to win the match- McAllister and Jowett both going close, while Andrew Rothwell once again proved an attacking threat from the right side of defence- but the game ended on a 0-0 scoreline.

The target had been a point away at a less than happy hunting ground- Pembroke Wanderers had knocked out Enniscorthy last season at St. Andrews in the Leinster Minor Cup- and a point was duly delivered. The Wexford men's high- tempo approach, combined with an unwillingness to allow Monkstown time on the ball, paid dividends. With five of their seven remaining matches at home in the league, Enniscorthy can be confident of another strong finish to the season.

Squad: Graham Hill; Andrew Rothwell; Keith Ogilvie; Clive Rothwell (c) ; Martyn Veitch; Roy Chapman; Glenn Chapman; Jonathon Rothwell; Jason Rothwell; Daithí Medcalf; Cathal Ó Suilleabháin; Seamus McAllister; Kieran Costello; Liam Jowett; P.J. Pierce, Robbie Walshe.

Enniscorthy Men I Vs Mullingar II / Away

16/11/2014

Enniscorthy had to make the long journey to Loreto College, Mullingar this weekend where they took on Mullingar II. The journey was well worth it for the Slaneysiders as they took home all three points in a thrilling 2-1 win, putting the visitors top of the Leinster Division 7 League.

Like Enniscorthy’s win over Pembroke Wanderers a week earlier, a difficult challenge awaited. Mullingar had yet to be beaten this season, and last season had played in Division 6. As a result, manager Fraser Rothwell opted for a more defensive team structure, as he knew the threat the home side possessed.

Mullingar from the off put the South East side's defence under immense pressure. However, It wasn’t until the final play of the first half that the deadlock was broken, and it was the Wexford men who stuck. An Enniscorthy attack resulted in a short corner for the visiting side; the Rothwell brothers- Clive and Jason- linked up to give Jason his fifth goal of the season. Advantage Enniscorthy.

On the restart, a very physical second half ensued as both teams were putting every ounce of their body on the line for their clubs. The umpires were particularly busy, doling out a yellow card to Mullingar (verbal abuse to umpire Cathal Ó Suilleabháin) and a green card to Enniscorthy's Glenn Chapman (use of the shoulder), leaving both sides at different stages down to ten men. As before, Mullingar brought great pressure to bear on Enniscorthy, but captain Clive Rothwell used his trademark aerial passes to perfection as they relieved the pressure on the visitors and immediately put the pressure back on the Mullingar defence. Midway in the second half a huge aerial from Clive Rothwell helped produce a short corner for Enniscorthy, which again saw the Rothwell brothers Clive and Jason linking up. This time it was Clive who was the beneficiary: two nil to the visitors. There was still plenty of time for the midlanders to come back at Enniscorthy. At this point Mullingar had nothing to lose and pushed hard but Enniscorthy kept solid in defence. With ten minutes to go Mullingar found themselves deep in the visitors half; the initial attack was dealt with by Glenn Chapman and Andrew Rothwell but a second chance passed them both, just out of their reach. Mullingar were back in with a chance of grabbing a draw but Enniscorthy's never give up attitude nearly saw them grab their third of the day, Robbie Walshe coming close with a late effort. The match ended 2-1 to the visitors in probably their toughest contest of the campaign so far, seeing them take top spot in the league.

A welcome break for Enniscorthy comes next weekend before they take on Division 6 side Fingal II in the Leinster Junior Cup on Sunday 30th November.

Squad: Andrew Rothwell; Martin Veitch; Clive Rothwell (c); PJ Pierce; Liam Jowett; Roy Chapman; Glenn Chapman; David Simmons; Jason Rothwell; Seamus McAlister; Graham Hill; Robbie Walshe; Daithí Medcalf; Jonathon Rothwell.
