Enniscorthy met with Bray in their fourth game of the Minor B League (girls under 14) at a wet Loreto Bray on Sunday morning. Enniscorthy took control from the start and were rewarded within five minutes of play by a goal from Tara Somers. The visitors continued to press and before long Enniscorthy secured a second score with a super reverse stick flick by Rebecca Oglivie. Bray responded well and pressed forward on a number of occasions, however the county Wicklow side found goalkeeper Kate Freeman in superb form throughout the encounter. Before the half was over Enniscorthy had doubled the lead with strikes from Faye Codd and Laura Sutton. Despite second half pressure from the hosts Freeman and her defence worked well to keep a clean sheet, ending the match the right side of a 4-0 scoreline, a result that puts the Slaneysiders top of the table with two games remaining. Squad: Kate Freeman, Beibhinn O’Brien, Rebecca Doyle, Emma Louise Doran, Eva Rothwell, Amy Murphy, Leah Kidd, Rebecca Oglivie, Tara Somers, Laura Sutton, Caoimhe Quigley, Faye Codd, Ellie Kehoe. The ladies third eleven continued their South East Cup campaign against Carlow's second side on Sunday at a wet Astro Active Centre. Both teams found the net early on in what was a pulsating encounter, and were deadlocked 3-3 at the break, but it was the visitors who secured the win on a 4-3 scoreline. Lisa Freyne goaled twice for Enniscorthy with Melanie Ni Dhuinn also scoring. Megan Dempsey and Linda Durnan also went close for Enniscorthy, who host Kilkenny II in the next round on February 4th.

It was the proverbial tough day at the office for Enniscorthy's second eleven men when they hosted high-flying Bray II in the second round of the Leinster Minor Cup at an overcast Astro Active Centre on Saturday. Eamonn Sweeney found the net early on for the hosts but that was as good as it got as Bray quickly found their stride against a side without a competitive fixture since mid December. Three goals behind at the break, Enniscorthy struggled to get any sort of foothold in the game, eventually losing by nine to a talented Bray side. Sean Fleming and Jack Cremmins grabbed a hat-trick each, while there were also goals for Bill Mitchell, Jason Collins, Simon Anglin and Graham Codd. Squad: Luke Doyle, Mick Jordan, Clive Rothwell, Robin Doyle, Alan Smith, Jason Rothwell, Robbie Walshe, Eamonn Sweeney, Shay O'Leary, Graeme Chapman, Cian Hogan, Eric Hendy, Kieran Costello, David Mulligan. On Saturday Enniscorthy's ladies first eleven hosted Newbridge 1st hoping to improve on last weekend's disappointing loss to UCD and it proved to be a match to remember.
The hosts started slowly, allowing the county Kildare side the vast majority of possession and putting the Enniscorthy defence of Lett, Watchorn, Smith and Owen under pressure. Indeed, the creaking defence conceeded a penalty corner early on which lead to the first goal of the game. Enniscorthy, though, pulled themselves back into the game with Chapman, Anna Flood and Wickham combining well to find Sweeney, whose effort hit off the left post en route to the back of the net. Newbridge were unfazed by the Enniscorthy reply, forcing three penalty corners before earning a penalty flick which was duly converted, leaving the visitors 2-1 up at the break. Six minutes into the second half Newbridge had the chance to stretch their lead when Norah McGinty in the Enniscorthy goal – who made a series of saves throught the match – was penalised for lying on the ball in the goalmouth. Fortunately for the home side the ball was sent wide and this seemed to be the moment the tide turned, though Enniscorthy had to wait to midway through the second half for the breakthrough. Laura Bailey found Wickham and her accurate pass in turn found Sweeney, for her second of the game. Enniscorthy were now in control and forced a number of penalty corners, Anna Flood getting the cathedral town side the lead. Newbridge were far from finished and with six minutes remaining on the clock captain Chapman stopped an almost certain goal for the visitors. With the clock then running out Enniscorthy fought hard to make certain of the win; Sweeny was fouled in the circle for the third penalty flick of the match. Laura Smith sent the ball high into the right hand roof of the net and sealed a 4-2 win. Enniscorthy now find themselves joint top on goal difference at the summit of Division 7 – Newbridge are a point behind with a game in hand – and now have a two week break from league action before entertaining Old Alexandra 4th on February 3rd. Squad: Norah McGinty, Julie Watchorn, Laura Smith, Olive Lett, Katie Owen, Leah Chapman, Jessie Flood, Laura Bailey, May Wickham, Anna Flood, Hannah Sweeny, Roisin Treacy, Hannah Graham. Enniscorthy 1st XI men were on the road again at the weekend as they travelled to Lucan to take on Weston Hockey Club for the second time this season. This time however, it was the second round of the Leinster Intermediate Cup.
Enniscorthy’s backs were against the wall for a considerable portion of the opening half of the game as the Dublin side put considerable pressure on their visitors. Weston came out with all guns firing , Enniscorthy relying on Roy Chapman and Ivan Rothwell making vital tackles to stop Weston’s attacks. Throughout the first half the Lucan- based side were awarded numerous penalty corners, which for the most part Enniscorthy's defence were equal to. Unfortunately, after Hill's initial save the Weston attackers were first to gain the ball and scored with a rebound shot. Enniscorthy slowly getting a foot hold in the game and making more of an impact on the flow of the game. Rynhart who know had moved into midfield was as always making a nuisance of himself and managed on more than one occasion to steal the ball off Weston players. Durnan and Rynhart linked up well for a quick free quick to cause the Dubliners trouble, but unfortunately an infringement put a stop to their attack. The game continued to ebb and flow as both sides were getting chances to cause each other issues. As the first half ended it was clear to see although Enniscorthy were getting chances, Weston were in control of the game and it would require a big effort from Enniscorthy to get themselves back in the match. Six minutes into the second half Weston doubled their lead. Durnan went close to getting his side back into it when he made a threatening run into the Weston circle using some impressive 3D skills, he gaining his side a penalty corner. The resulting shot by O’Sullivan went narrowly wide. However, Enniscorthy came right back at Weston and O’Sullivan made up for his previous miss. Enniscorthy’s tails were up and Andrew Rothwell made a break up the right wing and put a threatening ball into the circle for O’Sullivan, but nothing was to come from this attempt. Two minutes later Weston had re established their two-goal lead. Doyle’s men were not down and out as they returned it to a one-goal lead to Weston when Rynhart scored Enniscorthy’s second goal. As the clock ticked down both sides had their chances, but. time was to run out on the visitors as the game finished 3-2 to the Dublin side. Donal Doyle’s men will have to learn from this encounter to help them improve as they set their eyes back on league action when they take on fourth – placed Naas on Saturday 3rd February. Squad: Graham Hill, Andrew Rothwell, David Simmons, Ivan Rothwell, Cory Cooke Glen Chapman, Roy Chapman, Daithi Medcalf, William Durnan, James O'Sullivan, Seb Rynhart, Charlie Dunne & Jacob English |
