Goals from Niall Maguire, Glenn Chapman, and Jason Rothwell gave Enniscorthy Hockey Club's men a 3-1 win over Corinthians IV in a sometime fractious encounter at Whitechurch Park on Saturday.

After two close- fought encounters earlier in the season- both won by Enniscorthy- the Slaneysiders were prepared for a challenging time, and so it proved. The visitors started the brighter, with Niall Maguire and Jason Rothwell tricky customers for the Corinthians de- fence. The physicality of Liukimas was also adding to the difficulties for the Reds. The hosts were dangerous on the counter, and Andrew Rothwell and Costello, working on either side of defence, were forced to scramble back on a number of occasions to disrupt a lively Corinthians attack.

After a first quarter dominated by Enniscorthy, Corinthians began to force their way into the game, creating a short corner which was, however, easily dealt with by the Wexford back four. Shortly after, Niall Maguire put Enniscorthy one up after a cross from Jason Rothwell following a strong run down the right wing by the latter. Despite this lead at half time, manager Fraser Rothwell was unhappy with the performance of his troops in the first period.

There had been a simmering undercurrent of tension throughout the first half, and as the second progressed these tensions surfaced on a number of occasions. Both sides were guilty of an overly- physical approach on occasion, and Enniscorthy were particularly unhappy after Glenn Chapman was the victim of a flying Corinthian's stick, and a free was awarded to the hosts. The resulting play saw the Reds send a high ball into the Enniscorthy semi-circle; hesitation by 'keeper John Casey and Costello allowed Corinthians to equalise.

This was a nervous period for both teams, but it was Enniscorthy who were able to get on top. After a quiet first half, Jonathon Rothwell was able to find space on the left side of mid- field and made several penetrating runs deep into the Corinthians half. Having swapped with Roy Chapman into midfield, Clive Rothwell moved back to defence, and with Ó Suilleabháin ably marshalling, the Enniscorthy back four stood firm. The crucial second came courtesy of Glenn Chapman, somehow connecting using a flying leap with the ball as it was flying inexorably wide of the Corinthians goal. The home side worked hard worked hard to win a second equaliser, and Enniscorthy defended desperately all over the pitch. Their efforts were helped when Corinthians went a man down, and Jason Rothwell sealed the points following a short corner. The hosts battled to the end, but Enniscorthy held out for an excellent win against quality opposition.

Squad: John Casey; Andrew Rothwell; Cathal Ó Suilleabháin; Clive Rothwell; Kieran Costello; Jonathon Rothwell; Roy Chapman; Glenn Chapman; Jason Rothwell; Edmundas Liukimas; Niall Maguire; Robbie Walshe; Rory Maguire; Seamus McAllister; P.J. Pierce

Another game, another three points claimed. Enniscorthy Hockey Club's men recorded their eighth league win of the season following a 7-0 demolition of St. Brendan's Phoenix Park at the Astro Active Centre on Saturday.

The previous encounter between the two sides had resulted in a 0-0 draw but for this encounter manager Fraser Rothwell had an almost complete deck from which to choose, being minus only the speedy Chris St. Clair Johnson and defenders P.J. Pierce and Kieran Costello. The team also welcomed back Keith Ogilvie and Edmundas Liukimas to the fray, and both featured in a strong starting eleven.

Under a clear sky, and watched by an enthusiastic home crowd, the hosts, attacking the Moran Park end, began with some probing moves against the visiting back line. The experienced St. Brendan's defence, though, proved difficult to break down, with no serious tests for their goalkeeper. The breakthrough arrived midway through the first half, as in a 90- second spell Enniscorthy goaled twice, the on-form Jonathon Rothwell opening, followed by Ó Suilleabháin netting his fifth of the season. The home side pressed on, seeking more and the third and fourth came from the stick of Jason Rothwell. Seamus McAllister opened his scoring account for the season to make it 5-0 at the break, converting a Jason Rothwell cross at the back post following a determined run by Robbie Walshe into the top of the semi-circle.

With the points secured, manager Fraser Rothwell opted for youth in the second half. Still, Enniscorthy were able to outclass their opponents, with Jonathon Rothwell claiming his second of the day- this time following a short corner - and Liukimas completed the misery for the visitors with the seventh after being set up by McAllister.

The Division 8 season is now just over half way through, and Enniscorthy find themselves well placed for promotion. Over recent weeks the team has discovered a rich vein of attacking form, and in combination with the best defence in Leinster men's hockey, Enniscorthy are emerging as a formidable side. 2012-13 Leinster Minor Cup winners Corinthians- currently in third position- lie in wait for the Slaneysiders next weekend.

Squad: Graham Hill; Greg Hawkins; Andrew Rothwell; Clive Rothwell; Keith Ogilvie; Glenn Chapman; Roy Chapman; Jonathon Rothwell; Edmundas Liukimas; Jason Rothwell; Cathal Ó Suilleabháin; John Casey; Niall Maguire; Rory Maguire; Seamus McAllister; Robbie Walshe.

men -  The tenth match: Bray II

Enniscorthy's men remain at the summit of Leinster division eight following a hard-fought victory over Bray II in the county Wicklow town on Saturday.

Following their resounding win over Dublin University IV the previous weekend, the Slaneysiders were prepared for a difficult challenge, and so it proved. Weather conditions proved tricky for both sides, but it was the hosts- though playing into a strong wind- who seemed to adapt best. Enniscorthy had to work hard to keep a lively Bray attack at bay, and Chapman, Clive Rothwell and Ó Suilleabháin were instrumental in stemming the opposition onslaught. After eight minutes, and against the run of play, Jason Rothwell found himself in possession inside the Bray semi-circle, and coolly slotted the ball into the back of the net.

Following this setback Bray worked hard to grab an equaliser and proved adept at pressurising the visiting defence, Ó Suilleabháin finding it difficult to find a loose team mate on hit outs. Midfielder Jonathon Rothwell's replacement due to an ankle injury at an early stage lead to the introduction of the experienced Robbie Walshe to the attack, while Jason Rothwell dropped back to his familiar right wing slot. Gradually Enniscorthy were able to assert themselves and McAllister and Walshe began posing problems for the Bray defence, ably assisted by Chapman and Clive Rothwell pushing forward from central midfield. Still, Bray were able to force a number of short corners, which were well dealt with by Casey and his defence.

Fraser Rothwell's half- time team talk concentrated on his team keeping its shape and dictating the pace of the game. Bray would play with a strong wind at their backs and a vociferous home support to spur them on: a tough thirty- five minutes lay ahead. Enniscorthy, though, played confidently from the restart and the central midfield pairing of Chapman and Clive Rothwell were combining well with Jason Rothwell on the right. In a free- flowing game, Bray's skillful midfielders such as Adam Brennan and Stuart Collier then began to find space and force the visitors back inside their own half.

Jonathon Rothwell shrugged off his ankle injury to return to the action, replacing Walshe up front. His appearance unsettled the Bray defence, dedication matched by the hardworking Hawkins, who played on despite a suspected broken bone in his left hand. Enniscorthy's de- fence had an altogether busier second half but proved far quicker than in previous performances in clearing their lines. An occasional foray into the Bray half kept their opponent's defence on their toes but Enniscorthy were unable to create any meaningful goal-scoring chances. Three short corners in a row, though, greatly increased the host's nerves; the final of which saw Ó Suilleabháin receive the push out and work the ball to Jonathon Rothwell, who was able to squeeze the ball across the line to make it a 2-0 scoreline.

The early Jason Rothwell goal proved a blessing for Enniscorthy as Bray cranked up the pressure as the second half wore on, but the former's desire not to concede was evident. Ó Suilleabháin was particularly impressive marshalling the defence, and Nolan, Hawkins, An- drew Rothwell and Costello all made vital interventions. 'Keeper John Casey proved solid as he enjoyed his fourth clean sheet of the season and Enniscorthy deservedly returned down the N11 with all three points.

men -  The ninth match: Dublin University IV

Rory Maguire struck twice and brother Niall added one of his own as Enniscorthy's men handed out a 6-1 drubbing to division 8 rivals Dublin University IV at Grange Road on Sunday.

Fraser Rothwell's side were without a competitive match since early December, and travelled to Three Rock Rovers' pitch in determined mood. Though missing Edmundas Liukimas, Keith Ogilvie, and Robbie Walshe, Enniscorthy fielded as strong starting eleven; Ó Suilleabháin acted as sweeper and Jason Rothwell added his experience and pace to the attack.

The visiting side made a solid start, passing the ball purposefully around midfield but finding it difficult to work their way through a packed Trinity defence. The students were dangerous on the break and Enniscorthy had to scramble quickly to halt the onrushing Trinity men. Despite their difficulties, an Enniscorthy goal looked increasingly likely. Cathal Ó Suilleabháin provided the opener midway through the half and supporters of the Wexford side expected a flurry of goals would follow. However, falling behind seemed to spur the students on and they responded following one of their trademark fast moves from central midfield. Enniscorthy's performance had noticeably slipped, and the equaliser had clearly rattled the visitors.

The half time break was badly needed as Fraser Rothwell's men had lost their cohesion and, just perhaps, some self- doubt had begun to creep in to their performance. A personnel shuffle saw Jason Rothwell move to his customary right hand side. Enniscorthy had one half remaining to maintain their position at the top of the league, and responded ruthlessly. Roy Chapman- who received a hard blow on the head from the ball in the first half- regained the lead with a ferocious shot, and Enniscorthy began to turn the screw. As a depleted Trinity side began to tire, the Slaneysiders became increasingly adventurous in attack, pressing higher up the pitch. Enniscorthy's attack was finding gaps in their opponents defence and St. Clair- Johnson and Jason Rothwell made numerous threatening runs into the Student's semi- circle. Good interplay between McAllister and Niall Maguire lead to Enniscorthy's third, and further scores seemed inevitable. Still, Trinity proved dangerous on the break and tough tackling from Casey, Clive Rothwell and Costello kept the Students at bay. Hill was also forced into a number of saves; to their credit, the Enniscorthy defence denied Trinity even a solitary short corner. Jason Rothwell secured the victory with goal number four, while a brace from Rory Maguire added a gloss to the scoreline.

Enniscorthy remain top of the league, and a healthy goal difference should prove beneficial in the weeks ahead. Despite the 6-1 scoreline, the Slaneysiders know that greater consistency is required.

Squad: Graham Hill; Andrew Rothwell; Clive Rothwell; Cathal Ó Suilleabháin; Kieran Costello; Jonathon Rothwell; Glenn Chapman; Roy Chapman; Niall Maguire; Chris St. Clair- Johnson; Seamus McAllister; John Casey; Rory Maguire.
