A successful day in Loreto for the 1st year girls

30/10/2015

We had a very successful day in Loreto Kilkenny last Saturday in our first league of the season for 1st year girls. We headed off with two teams of 8 to play Carlow and came away with two wins for each team.

Team one had two strong wins for both games, and played well together as a team. This is a great start for the girls who are just finding their positions on the half pitch used for the southeast league. This was Ellen's last match with us for a while and we wish her well on her new adventure.

Team one : Ellen Creed, Martha Dunne, Norah McGinty, Ciara O Connor, Lettie Hassett, Emer Bowe, Rebecca Ogilvie and Leah Kidd.

Team two also had two strong wins.  They played well as a team keeping shape and running into space, and scoring plenty of goals, whilst also defensively strong.

Team two : Ciara Doyle, Eimear Doyle, Niamh Ogilvie, Gilly Phelan, Anna Kavanagh, Caoimhe Larkin, Rebecca Leech and Ailbhe Harrington.

We are out again on Nov 8th for a Blitz in Loreto KK hosted by Carlow. Thanks to all that travelled last Saturday and keep up the good work girls.

A scoreline that does not tell the full story

Enniscorthy's men's second team were the only adult representatives of the club in action over the bank holiday weekend, and they fell to a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Dublin University in a fast-paced fixture.

The Wexford men travelled to Santry minus two vital representatives of their defence- PJ Pierce (work commitments) and Mick Jordan (injury)- and the makeshift back four of Fraser and Ivan Rothwell, Andrew Rothwell and Greg Hawkins was ruthlessly exposed inside two minutes by the league leaders. An attack down Enniscorthy's right swiftly broke into the visiting side's semi-circle and the resulting shot found a gap between goalkeeper Luke Doyle- guarding his near post- and midfielder Costello who had worked back to the opposite post.

The students quickly doubled their lead as forays into the opposition half by the Wexford side were closed down quickly tough tackling meant Enniscorthy had little time to get comfortable on the ball. This time Trinity fired in from the left, beating Doyle who had advanced off his line and a despairing dive from Costello.

After this explosive start Enniscorthy worked their way back into proceedings- though perhaps the hosts had subconsciously taken the foot off the pedal. Alan Smith in central midfield worked hard to link up defence and attack, and Fraser Rothwell made a number of moves deep into the student's half. In the forward department Robbie Walshe managed to create a number of short corners, but Andrew Rothwell was finding the unfamiliar water- based surface tricky to deal with on his push-outs.

With the scoreline reading 2-0 to the hosts at the break, the Wexford side faced an uphill battle to get any sort of result. Trinity oozed confidence throughout, and refused to panic as Enniscorthy tried to fight their way back into the game. In both attack and defence they were able to commit numbers, and a large panel afforded them the luxury of frequent rest periods for their players. Still, Enniscorthy battled hard; Niall Maguire and Andrew Rothwell both produced several barnstorming runs; Luke Doyle showed signs of developing into a talented 'keeper; and John McWey was tireless in his efforts. At the back Hawkins and Ivan Rothwell put in a series of decisive tackles, breaking up wave after wave of attacks.

Across the team, though, energy levels began to drop and this, perhaps, is where the fault for the third and fourth goals lay. A mis-clearence by Fraser Rothwell only found a Trinity player, whose goal-bound shot was stopped by the foot of Costello, resulting in a penalty flick. The fourth arrived following a series of passes which split the Wexford men open, culminating in a shot which gave Doyle little chance.

Enniscorthy tried hard to get a goal back- Walshe and Smith proving particularly adept in the attack, while Niall Maguire put the ball over the bar with just minutes remaining- but to no avail. The hosts ran out deserved winners- but perhaps the scoreline does not exactly reflect the closeness of the encounter.

Squad: Luke Doyle; Greg Hawkins; Ivan Rothwell; Fraser Rothwell; Andrew Rothwell; Alan Smith; Kieran Costello; Niall MAguire; Robbie Walshe; Rory Maguire; William Durnan; John McWey; Jack Redmond.

Club Fundraising - a note from our Fundraising C0-Ordinator

Dear all,

As you may be aware, running our hockey club is a costly exercise, and we run a number of fundraising events throughout the year to achieve this. The committee has, this year, chosen to alter this approach slightly- and we need your support!

This year, each section of the club- junior girls, junior boys, men, and women- will be asked to run its own fundraiser. For example, our men's teams will set up a fundraising committee and run an event or events. Our aim is for each section to raise at least €1,000. I know it seems like a tall order but I also know that we have many talented individuals out there!

NOW is the time to put your thinking caps on and come up with some exciting ideas, or to put your name forward to help run an activity; the committee has decided on a deadline of October 22 for the submission of ideas.

Please contact me through our PRO, Andrew Rothwell by emailing enniscorthyhockeypro@gmail.com, and I will be delighted to speak with you.

Yours in sport,
Kieran Costello

Nothing could separate the south east sides

19/10/2015

There was nothing to separate the sides as Enniscorthy and Wicklow played out a scoreless draw at the Astro Active Centre on Saturday in Leinster division 7.

The first half started promisingly for the Wexford men as William Durnan and Rory Maguire linked up well to set up the latter for a shot at goal which grazed the post. The home side's defence had to be on their guard, though, as Wicklow could be dangerous on the counter. Just before the half-time whistle Durnan had a great chance which was just slightly off the mark.

The second half was dominated by the Wicklow side, with Enniscorthy struggling to create chances. FCJ Bunclody student Daithí Medcalf worked hard to give the hosts an outlet between the midfield and forward departments. Midway through the half Medcalf set up John McWey, but his shot on goal was well saved. After that the Wicklow side dominated proceedings; over the last 15 minutes of the match the Garden County men were awarded five short corners but some last ditch defending kept the scoreline to nil all.
Next week Enniscorthy's second team travel to Dublin to take on league leaders, Dublin University (Trinity College).

Enniscorthy Squad: Luke Doyle; Ivan Rothwell; Greg Hawkins; Mark Jowett; Nick Peare; Daithí Medcalf; Liam Jowett; Jack Redmond; Robbie Walshe; Rory Maguire; William Durnan; Conor Tull; Jacob English; Fraser Rothwell.

It had to happen eventually

It had to happen eventually. Over two seasons unbeaten in a competitive match at home finally came to an end on Saturday as Enniscorthy's first-choice eleven were felled by visitors St. Brendan's Phoenix Park on a 0-1 scoreline.

It was an unhappy outing for the team's new set of jersies, sponsored by local firm Pure Oil and Lohan and Donnelly Consulting Engineers.

From the start the Enniscorthy men were put under pressure as they struggled to find a footing in the game. Inside the first two minutes the Dublin side found themselves in their opponents 23, but to the delight- and relief- of the home support the defence of Andrew Rothwell, Keith Ogilvie, Clive Rothwell and Martyn Vietch were able to deal with the attacks. Goalkeeper Graham Hill was also called upon early on as he cleared a dangerous Brendan's ball right up the pitch making sure the pressure was firmly taken off his goal. An early short corner for the Dublin side saw the ball find the back of the net but the "goal" was disallowed as the ball narrowly missed the back board of the ne. With that, Enniscorthy were kicked into action and nearly found the back of the net themselves as a ball up the right wing found Niall Maguire who chipped the ball past the ‘keeper but the ball bounced narrowly wide.

Following a poor first half performance Enniscorthy came out strong for the second period, beginning by attacking the flanks of the Phoenix Park side. Clive Rothwell was to the forefront of these efforts, distributing well with a succession of aerials and wide passes to Veitch and Andrew Rothwell, who then pushed ahead in search of forwards Liam Jowett and Daithi Medcalf. The Dublin side found themselves temporarily down to ten men when Jowett was tripped on a foray into the opposition half, but Enniscorthy were unable to take advantage of their numerical superiority. Shortly after Enniscorthy were awarded a short corner but were unable to beat the onrushing defence. Enniscorthy weren’t the only team winning short corners, as St. Brendan’s were awarded two short corners in quick succession, the first of which saw Hill called upon to keep the visitors at bay with a spectacular save. With their second, though, the travelling team managed to squeeze the ball under the diving Hill, and the deadlock was broken.

Enniscorthy had time to find an equaliser and continued to attack with the Chapman brothers, Glenn and Roy leading by example. The home side battled hard as they went in search of a goal to save their home record. Ó Suilleabháin came close in the dying minutes but the visiting ‘keeper was able to cope with the shot and cleared his lines. The match finished with all three points heading back up the M11, leaving the Enniscorthy side still in search of their first win of the season.

There now follows a welcome break next weekend for Enniscorthy 1sts; they take on Suttonians in Dublin on October 31st.

Enniscorthy Squad: Graham Hill; Andrew Rothwell; Keith Ogilvie; Clive Rothwell; Martyn Veitch; David Simmons; Cathal Ó Suilleabháin; Roy Chapman; Glenn Chapman; Liam Jowett; Daithi Medcalf; Edmundas Liuikimas; Niall Maguire; Jacob English. Coach: Donal Doyle; Manager: Fraser Rothwell.
