Heavy league defeat for L2

16/12/2017

Enniscorthy's ladies second XI had their last match before Christmas on Saturday last, played in freezing conditions at Alexandra College in Dublin 3. The early encounters of the game say the Dublin side earn a penalty corner, but defender Bolger then cleared after a fabulous save by Medcalf.

In the second half a powerful strike by Murphy came very close to opening the scoring for the visitors. Despite the efforts of the Enniscorthy defence who were working well together, Old Alexandra put three goals by the visitor’s 'keeper. Enniscorthy continued to battle hard and push forward and threaten the home sides defence. Super movement by Murphy up the centre of the pitch saw the Wexford side score their only goal of the game. Murphy put the ball through to Hickey who was quick on her feet to slip the ball past the keeper.

Enniscorthy will now break for Christmas before they prepare for their first game of 2018 when they take on Pembroke Wanderers on 13th January.
Squad: Alice Medcalf, Roisin O’Muiri, Amy Dalton, Eleanor Bolger, Julie Hayes, Niamh Redmond, Bridget Gainford, Emer O’Doherty, Laura Redmond, Elaine Hickey, Avril Buttle, Ciara Murphy, Mairead Neville

Narrow win maintains L1 charge

Enniscorthy’s Ladies First XI maintained their pressure on league-leaders UCD with a 1-0 win over Genesis in Division 7 on Saturday with a goal from Sonja Rynhart.

With the home side taking the first tip off, Enniscorthy applied pressure, eventually turning over the ball and attacking up the right hand side of the pitch. Forwards Olive Lett, Anna Flood and Sonja Rynhart had many circle entries early on and, alongside midfield Jessie Flood, were unlucky not to capitalise on their goal-scoring attempts. Great passing up the left from back Katie Owen to Laura Bailey, Laura Smith and Olive Lett put pressure on the home side’s defence.

After 15 minutes of play, a smart intercept by left wing Lett left the Genesis defence out of position, and a quick pass right to the approaching Rynhart allowed her to strike the ball cleanly into the back of the goal.

After half time, Genesis increased their attack. Nevertheless, the defence of Katie Owen, May Wickham, Julie Watchorn and Leah Chapman, ensured the opposition did encroach on Enniscorthy goalie Norah McGinty.

Despite dominating proceedings, Enniscorthy were unable to extend their lead following Rynhart’s first-half strike, leading to a nervous final quarter for the Wexford side.  Enniscorthy now take a well-deserved break and return for their first match of 2018 when they take on Clontarf 3rds at home on 6th January.

Squad: Norah McGinty, Katie Owen, May Wickham, Julie Watchorn, Leah Chapman (C), Laura Bailey, Laura Smith, Jessie Flood, Olive Lett, Anna Flood, Sonja Rynhart, Hannah Sweeney, Roisin Treacy.

The under 16 girls got their Jacqui Potter Cup Plate campaign off to a resounding start on Sunday against Clontarf, emerging 6-0 winners. A brace each from H Sweeney and E Doyle along with one from N Ogilvie and an OG means a local derby in the next round as Enniscorthy take on Wexford in late January.

Big derby win for M2

The cold snap lead to the cancellation of many sporting fixtures throughout the county, and hockey was no exception as the two adult first teams had their matches at the Astro Active Centre postponed on Saturday. The ladies first eleven were due to host Genesis in the Division 7/8 Cup, while their male counterparts were to host Corinthians III in Division 4. It wasn't all bad news for the men, though, as following an appeal regarding the eligibility of a Pembroke Wanderers player who took part in the league encounter on November 25th, all three points were awarded to the Wexford side. This result leaves Enniscorthy three points clear at the summit of Division 4, three points ahead of Pembroke.

The only adult fixture to survive the weather was the Division 7 derby game between the men's second eleven and Wicklow III on Saturday. Goals from Mick Jordan, Robbie Walshe and Niall Maguire gave the cathedral town side a commanding 3-0 half time lead, and the visitors piled on the agony at East Glendalough School in the second half, as goals from Rory Maguire and a brace from Daithí Medcalf gave Enniscorthy a 6-0 away win and second place in Division 7.

Squad: Luke Doyle, Daithí Medcalf, Rory Maguire, Mick Jordan, Niall Maguire, Robbie Walshe, Graeme Chapman, Alan Smith, Clive Rothwell, Jason Rothwell, Shay O'Leary, Eamonn Sweeney, Nigel Bailey, David Mulligan, Eric Hendy, Roy Chapman

It was a busy weekend for Enniscorthy's under 16 intermediate A and intermediate yellow girls squads, who were in action against Corinthians and YMCA respectively. YMCA were victors on a 2-1 scoreline while Corinthians inflicted a second defeat on the intermediate A side. Attention now turns to the Junior Jacqui Potter Shield for the U16 group, who host Clontarf on Sunday at the Astro Active Centre.
