A great game between two strong sides

After a disappointing last match against Wicklow, Enniscorthy hockey’s 1st men were out to make amends when they travelled to Mount Temple School last Saturday to take on Clontarf 3rds. The men travelled with the same squad of players as the previous outing but this time with greater focus.

The Slaneysiders, under the command of coach Donal Doyle and his captain pairing of Graham Hill and vice captain Roy Chapman, hit the ground running as they knew a strong performance was needed to be able to break down a strong Clontarf side. Both sides came with a great mix of youth and experience.  Enniscorthy’s passing game was sharp and accurate, giving them more time on the ball picking out safe, smart balls down the right and left flanks to forward players Jowett, Durnan and Liukimas along with their substitutes Jason Rothwell and Maguire. Enniscorthy had a solid structure in the midfield, with Medcalf and the Chapman brothers controlling the game from the centre of the park and cutting out any threatening breaks by the home side. In the first half the visitors gained two short corners but were unable to break the deadlock as the Dublin side’s defence kept them at bay. Jowett came very close to grabbing a goal when he stretched out high above his head after a ball came into the circle but unfortunately his deflection went narrowly over the cross bar. It seemed likely that a goal would come for Enniscorthy eventually but patience was going to be required. Tensions were high in the Clontarf side as Enniscorthy held on to the ball for long periods, with Maguire and Jowett being targeted on a number of occasions with heavy tackles. A Clontarf player found himself sent to the corner for two minutes as he was given a green card. The same player later found himself back in the corner when he was given a yellow card for a similar offence. Half time came and it was still all-square but the visitors were the more comfortable of the two sides.

Donal Doyle pulled his men in at half time and reiterated his side’s game plan, to make sure they continued with the strong performance of the first half. The Enniscorthy defence of Simmons, Vietch, and the Rothwell cousins, Ivan and Andrew, were in possession of the ball for large periods of the game keeping the ball moving, wearing down the home side. Strong attacks were becoming more common for the visitors as Medcalf and the Chapman brothers continued to put pressure on the Dubliners. Enniscorthy again was awarded two short corners in the final half and on the latter of these with 6 minutes to go they scored the goal they had so patiently being building up to. Medcalf injected the ball to Roy Chapman who passed the ball back to Medcalf, who then swept the ball between the ‘keepers legs and into the back of the net. The Slaneysiders stayed strong and held out for a well-deserved win, with keeper Hill only being called upon on one occasion to make a save.

A great game between two very strong sides, with the Wexford men coming out on top and heading home, down the M11 with all three points and most importantly, a strong performance from the entire squad under the watchful eye of coach Donal Doyle and manager Fraser Rothwell. Next up for the men is another tough encounter when UCD men travel to the Astro Active in Enniscorthy this Saturday.

Enniscorthy Squad: Graham Hill; Andrew Rothwell; David Simmons; Martyn Vietch; Ivan Rothwell; Daithi Medcalf; Glenn Chapman; Roy Chapman; Liam Jowett; Edmundas Liukimas; William Durnan; Niall Maguire; Jason Rothwell. Coach: Donal Doyle. Manager: Fraser Rothwell.

After a break of four weeks due to a cancelled game two weeks ago Enniscorthy Hockey 1st men welcomed Wicklow Hockey 1st men for what has become a local derby game. On every occasion of these sides meeting it is always a thrilling and tough encounter with many games ending all square. Last Saturday was no different as going into the game both sides were joint top of Leinster Division 5 with equal points and goals for and against.

Wicklow started strong, as they were they quicker to settle into the game. Enniscorthy were unsettled, perhaps due to being a little rusty after their extended break without a game. The Slaneysiders were dealt a blow when they lost sweeper Simmons when a ball deflected up off a stick, hitting him above the eye. Roy Chapman dropped back into sweeper for the period Simmons was off and joined defenders Vietch, Ivan Rothwell and Andrew Rothwell. Unfortunately for Enniscorthy loosing the ever-reliable Simmons seemed to put the home side under pressure as they rushed when they were on the ball and made uncharacteristic mistakes, mistakes that Donal Doyle’s men wouldn’t usual make. Wicklow took advantage of this and pushed the Wexford men and were first to break the deadlock when a well played ball was sent down the right wing where the ball was pushed into Hill’s circle where it was met by a free attacker who skilfully sent ‘keeper Hill in the wrong direction and slotted the ball into the now empty goal before an Enniscorthy defender could get across.

Tensions were high with Wicklow having a man green carded and sent to the corner for two minutes, as Enniscorthy tried to settle and get a hold of the game. However, Wicklow were taking their chances when Enniscorthy were unsettled as they were well aware of the threat Enniscorthy poses. 10 minutes after their first goal, Wicklow managed to secured a second when they intercepted an Enniscorthy pass. The Wicklow attacker found himself in a one-on-one with Enniscorthy keeper and Wicklow came victorious out of the encounter. Shortly after, Enniscorthy was restored to their starting back line when Simmons returned to the field and try and get his men back into the game. Enniscorthy held strong and kept the visitors at bay and were happy to here the whistle blow for the end of the 1st half.

Donal Doyle rallied his side as he tried to get them to re-focus on the game. His side started the second half a lot stronger than they had been in the first.  The midfield partnership of Medcalf and Chapman brothers, Glenn and Roy and midfield substitute Jason Rothwell were getting more time on the ball and pushing forward and feeding the attackers Jowett, Maguire and Liukimas along with attacking substitute Durnan. On a number of occasions they came agonisingly close to reducing the gap but no matter how hard they tried the Wicklow defence wanted to keep a clean sheet. Wicklow were awarded a number of short corners but the determined short corner defence of the home side were very quick at clearing the danger. With just 10 minutes to go and the Slaneysiders throwing everything at it Doyle pull off a defender and adding an extra man upfront in to aid their search for a goal. Enniscorthy themselves were awarded a number of shorts but it wasn’t until the very last short corner and in fact the last play of the game when any score resulted. Enniscorthy put everyone up for it, just leaving ‘keeper Hill in their half of the pitch. A ball to the top was slipped right to Liukimas who pushed the ball passed the charging defence of Wicklow who could do nothing to stop the powerful shot. It finished 2-1 with all three points going back to Wicklow. Enniscorthy have a lot to take from the game and will learn from this experience and hope that this can help them go to Clontarf next Saturday and come home with a win and most importantly a strong performance.

Enniscorthy Squad: Graham Hill; Andrew Rothwell; David Simmons; Martyn Vietch; Ivan Rothwell; Daithi Medcalf; Glenn Chapman; Roy Chapman; Liam Jowett; Edmundas Liukimas; William Durnan; Niall Maguire; Jason Rothwell. Coach: Donal Doyle. Manager: Fraser Rothwell.

A bitterly cold Sunday afternoon saw Enniscorthy Ladies 1st XI face Carlow Ladies for the first time this season. Enniscorthy with an almost-full panel were optimistic regarding their chances of securing 3 more points and inching up the scoreboard.

Enniscorthy started with their choice of sides, with captain Olive Lett choosing to start the game with our backs to the low winter son. With a Carlow pass back, Enniscorthy looked to start attaching strong from the word go. The first five minutes saw Enniscorthy winning their first short corner of the game. Winger Sonja Rynhart took a strike that came off the foot of a Carlow defender for a second short corner, defended well by Carlow.  Carlow rebounded with attack towards the Enniscorthy half and won their own short corner. Enniscorthy were determined to not let the ball pass the keeper and the short corner was defended well by Katie Owen, Jessie Flood, Áine O’Brien and Julie Watchorn. The first goal of the game came from excellent teamwork from Enniscorthy and superb passing up the left hand side of the pitch. Sweeper Watchorn took the hit out finding left back Katie Owen on the sideline, who pushed up the line. The ball found midfielder Anna Flood near the top of the circle who slotted it into the left post for forward Marti Rudd to deflect passed the Carlow keeper, giving the home side the lead.

After half time, the home side came back determined to add more points to the scoreboard, and worked the ball well around the backs, with right back Áine O’Brien pushing to midfielder Ruth Harrington for some lovely play up the right side of the pitch. Centre mid Anna Flood worked tirelessly to try penetrate the Carlow circle but the experienced visiting defenders made the task a difficult one. Flood’s efforts paid off when she found winger Rynhart on the left post, who managed to flick the ball across the keeper into the right corner of the goal at an impressive angle. Not long after, Enniscorthy won another short corner. O’Brien pushed a quick an accurate ball to Rynhart who took a direct shot from the top of the circle striking the ball through the Carlo keeper’s legs.
The full time whistle blew leaving the home side with a 3-0 victory and 3 more points on the league table. They now look forward to their next league encounter when they face Wexford 1st XI on December 4th.

Gorey started play taking the tip against Enniscorthy Ladies' Second hockey team in the Southeast League last Sunday. A quick paced game followed with the home side making some lovely runs up the field. Serena Hatton kept the ball travelling in the right direction with strong clearances down the field. Gorey hit back and won a free outside the home circle, but defenders Róisín Ó Muirí and Ilsa Flynn were ready for it. Gorey then won a short corner but gained nothing from it as the defense team stayed strong. Ball was cleared by Róisín Ó Muirí but Gorey won another short corner. They gained nothing from this one either thanks to an impressive save by Aoife Foran. Gorey gained another 2 shorts but were unable to score thanks to the Enniscorthy defense team.

The ball was cleared and took up by Avril Buttle who made a fabulous run. A Gorey free saw the ball make it's way back up the field again and another short corner ensued. Serena Hatton saved a shot on goal to keep the sides level. Kim O'Connor worked with Alice Doyle and Fiona Breen to move play quickly up the field. Avril Buttle got a lovely shot on goal.

Another short corner earned Gorey a goal. Enniscorthy responded, Alice Doyle and Eleanor Bolger moving the ball well. Enniscorthy won a short corner as play came to a close. The homeside played out two short corners but were unsuccessful in scoring. Match ended 4-0 to the away side.

A crisp morning journey for 2nd ladies

Enniscorthy Hockey Club Ladies 2nds travelled to Kilkenny College on a crisp, sunny afternoon to face Southeast League strongholds’ Kilkenny 1ts last Sunday. A quick-paced game had both sides on their toes from the start. Kilkenny were strong on the attack but Ilsa Flynn and Róisín Ó Muirí worked together flawlessly to keep the favourites from scoring. It took a short corner for the home side to score their first goal. Aoife Foran and her strong defence line didn’t make it easy for them however. Serena Hatton stopping a sharp shot on goal and was injured in the process. The girls played on however and were not put off by a series of short corners, Aoife Foran making a brilliant save as Kilkenny attempted to jab the ball in at the side of her goal. A rebound saw our goalie making a fantastic slide to ward off the ball on the far side of the goal. Kilkenny had another short corner but the Slaneysider defender’s kept them wide and that’s where the home-side ball went too.

Eleanor Bolger’s hit-out saw the ball travelling into Kilkenny’s side of the pitch. Fabulous running from Niamh Buttle and Alice Doyle brought the ball up the field. The girls were on a run with Avril Buttle supporting and moving the ball on nicely towards the Kilkenny goal. The model county hit back hard, smashing the ball back to their side of the field. Enniscorthy defenders faced down some tough shots, stopping the ball and deflecting it. The shots were coming heavy, several going way out of bounds; high above the goal as the Enniscorthy defenders blocked hard shots on goal.

Another short corner against Enniscorthy and Aoife Foran was on the ball, stopping it with her knees. Eleanor launched the ball out again and fast play ensued; Róisín Ó Muirí winning a free for Enniscorthy. Ball was launched out again, Fiona Breen and Fiona Rothwell made speedy progress down the field. Ball was passed to Caroline Doyle who continued to move the ball at great pace. Alas, the homeside were ready and kept them back.

A tough but high tempo game saw Enniscorthy on the wrong side of the score line, but the team are undiscouraged and now focusing on their next match.

Enniscorthy Squad:  Aoife Foran (captain), Serena Hatton, Ilsa Flynn, Kim O’Connor, Róisín Ó Muirí, Eleanor Bolger, Alice Doyle, Fiona Breen, Caroline Doyle, Fiona Rothwell, Amy D’alton, Avril Buttle, Niamh Buttle, Mairéad Neville.

A mild October morning on Sunday 3oth saw the Enniscorthy Ladies 3rd team make their debut of this season in a friendly match against the club’s second team. It may have been the third’s first match but this team contained some very experienced players and loyal club members. The Enniscorthy seconds came out strong. The defence-line continued to impress this season, with captain Aoife Foran stopping every shot on goal. Third’s players’ Sheila James and Joy Byrne looked strong up front but seconds’ defenders Ilsa Flynn and Róisín Ó Muirí were letting nothing through. These two young ladies protected their goal gracefully, working together in tandem and switching as necessary. Serena Hatton then played the ball high, making some fabulous runs and ensuring that ball reached her midfielders and forwards. The third’s midfield team were looking strong; Jacinta Kinsella and Caroline Doyle were swift on their feet and kept their seconds’ team counterparts, Alice Kelly, Eleanor Bolger, Saoirse Power and Elaine Hickey, busy in centre-field. The seconds scored their first goal of the game from a short corner. Another goal came later in play when Saoirse Power broke through the third’s defence line, moving the ball into Mairead Neville in the D. The second’s pressed high and attempted to improve on this, Fiona Breen working the ball into Niamh Buttle. Niamh came close with some lovely shots on goal, but the third’s defense team were close on her heels, Ivanna Yates and Irene Doyle well up to speed as they worked with goalkeeper Kim O’Connor. The game ended with a score of 2-0 to the seconds.
