Leinster U14 Boys' Hockey League AstroActive, Bellefield Enniscorthy 0, Dublin YMCA 2 (Alex Wall, Ben O'Grady) An historic first but no points for Enniscorthy as the under 14's staged the club's first competitive under age Leinster fixture on Sunday, December 14. The visitors from YMCA, older and more experienced, took the win with a goal in either half but were let know that they had been in a match. Enniscorthy were competitive in every sector against a side that featured under 16 interprovincial star Ben O'Grady. He was well policed throughout by Peter Yaciuk O'Connor and only slipped his marker once, to score the second goal of the afternoon. Home side heroes included goalie Glen Rothwell, who was given great cover by the centre back pairing of Harry Somers and Pearse Rogan. Seb Rynhart was outstanding in a largely defensive midfield role and a few swift late breaks made Ronan O'Leary the pick of the forwards. One loss and one victory (against Weston) to their credit, the side is intent on making the top three in the division when they resume after Christmas.

Enniscorthy under 12 girls have had a very busy weekend of hockey. On Saturday the 3rd 4th 5th and 6th class teams played a blitz hosted by Gorey and on Sunday a group of 4th and 5th class players travelled to Wicklow for a blitz involving Wicklow and Greystone’s.
It was obvious on both days that a lot of work has been done this season. The standard of hockey has really improved and all of the girls must be complimented on their level of skill. Their enthusiasm and positive attitude is evident from the side lines and it is clear that the players are really enjoying the game. Results on both Saturday and Sunday were very much in Enniscorthy favour and it was particularly interesting to see the girls performance against Wicklow and grey stones. Standard of hockey in South East has definitely improved and it is good to see the Enniscorthy girls travelling north and winning 15 games out of 15! William Durnan's goal couldn't save the Leinster Lions from ducking out of the Under 16 cup today in a 4-1 defeat to Monkstown. The match at Saint Columba's College was promising up to a point for the lions as there was pressure at both ends but during a short nine minute period Monkstown knocked in 3 first half goals.
William Durnan's one on one with the keeper fell Leinster Lions way shortly after half time and raised morale for the team up against it. Monkstown followed shortly with their final goal to close the match and kick the Lions out of the cup. This match shows promise for the future in the league. Enniscorthy players: Daithi Medcalf, William Durnan, John McWee, Jack Doran, Luke Doyle and Ivan Rothwell Enniscorthy’s under 18 girls braved the bitter cold in East Glendalough yesterday to play their second league match of the 2014/15 season. Eager to move on from and make up for their disappointing defeat against Hermes 2 weeks previously, the girls entered the game against Boyne with a focussed mindset. Enniscorthy took tip-off and started the game with the sun in their eyes. This proved to be no issue for the south east girls as they strung together some beautiful, accurate passes and made some excellent runs. It was clear the team had learned from their previous mistakes and some of the best hockey of the season was on display. Jessie Flood opened the scoring for the Slaney siders with a great shot from the top of the D, slotting the ball into the bottom left hand corner. Enniscorthy had some short corner opportunities but were unable to convert, due to some excellent defensive pressure from Boyne.
Throughout the first half, some fantastic midfield play from the Flood sisters, Jessie and Anna, made things very difficult for the Boyne defence. Forward, Emma Kidd, was in devastating form, racking up three goals in quick succession, including a stunning raised sweep, which the Boyne keeper had no chance of stopping. Boyne looked threatening at times, attacking mostly down the left wing, but the defensive trio of Katie Owen, Emily Boyne and Ruth Harrington remained calm and collected and eliminated these threats, often setting up counter attacks and offensive opportunities. The score at half time was 4-0 to the ‘scorthy girls. Half time saw three changes made, with Grace Mernagh, Emily Daly and Sophie McCabe joining the field of play. More offensive tactics were employed, with the defensive players maintaining a higher line on the pitch and participating more in the attacking play. This proved effective and the girls won a short corner. The ball was passed out straight to the top of the circle where it was stopped by Jessie Flood and slipped left to her sister, Anna, who didn’t hesitate in tucking the ball into the bottom right hand corner. A momentary lapse in concentration, combined with the high defensive line, left Enniscorthy scrambling back against a Boyne counter attack. The away team capitalised on a 3v1 situation and scored. Despite this ‘scorthy maintained their composure and struck back with a goal from Grace Mernagh. With 10 minutes remaining, a clash of heads stopped play as both sides assessed the damage. Jessie Flood took a knock to the head and a substitution was made. A Boyne foot in the D won Enniscorthy another short corner and referee, Roy Chapman, informed the girls that this was the last play of the game. The familiar call of “everybody up” rang out as the ‘scorthy girls prepared to take full advantage of the game’s dying moments. Anna Flood stepped up to the plate and hammered home a stunning shot, closing out the game with the sound of the ball hitting the backboard. The game ended Enniscorthy-7, Boyne-1. Thanks to Fiona Kidd and Irene Doyle for travelling up and coaching us to such a great win, and to Roy Chapman for reffing. Well done to all the girls involved, the hard work and determination every single one of them showed contributed masses to this great win. A huge team effort ensured a day out in the cold was definitely worth it. Onwards and upwards to our next match and our next win. It was an early start for the Enniscorthy Hockey Club 1st year girls team who travelled last Sunday morning to play Tullamore in the West Leinster League, their first ever competitive 11 a side game on a full pitch.
Enniscorthy started with direction and purpose and straight away took the game to their opponents. Using the full width of the pitch with winger Hannah Sweeney combining with Susannah Doyle created a goal scoring chance for centre forward Elaine Quigley who finished smartly to score our first goal. This was a real confidence boost to this young Enniscorthy side and as the game wore on, they created more and more chances. With debutants Ciara Kelly outstanding in midfield and Ailbhe Harrington working very well in the forward line, they created another opportunity this time, again, good work by Elaine Quigley who got the final touch. With the girls now two nil up, it was the turn of the Tullamore team to attack. But with Aoife Mernagh, Katie Sutton and Sophie Gillot solid in the back line and captain Laura Smith controlling things at sweeper, Tullamore never really threatened. The couple of times that they did break through Alice Medcalf was safe and dependable in goal. With some positional switches Emer Doyle and Eve Furlong combined to create some penalty corners. One of which was converted by Susannah Doyle to make the score three nil. This was a day of first for this young Enniscorthy side. It was their first full game of 11 a side on a full pitch. It was their first victory in an 11 a side game. It was their first time they played a game with penalty corners and first time scoring from a penalty corner. All in all it was a magnificent performance by every player involved. We would like to thank the parents who travelled on the bus and the parents who travelled to support. A special word of thanks to the sixth class players, Ciara Kelly and Ailbhe Harrington who weren't out of their depth by any means and played very well. This team now hope to build on this performance and will look to improve again in their upcoming games after Christmas!!! A tough day at the office for Enniscorthy Hockey Clubs senior men’s team last Sunday as they took on their rival from last years division 8, Corinthians. Last season Enniscorthy played the Dubliners three times, twice in the league and once in the minor cup. The Slaney men came out with three wins out of three very tough, but extremely exciting games. The division 7 encounter of these sides was every bit as exciting as last season but this time there was no winner, as the game ended in a nil all draw.
The Slaney siders had the advantage of a home game, only their second of the season. Corinthians travelled with a very strong team with a great mix of experience and youth, very similar to the home team of the day, Enniscorthy. From the off Enniscorthy pushed hard and played some of the best hockey they have played all season, but unfortunately similarly to last week, Corinthians made it very had for the south east men to convert their chances into goals. Jonathon Rothwell came very close in the opening moments with some great team play and some great individual skill from the man himself, but unfortunately it wasn’t to be on this occasion. The Slaney sider’s kept the pressure on and worked some great plays down both the right and left wings. Corinthians chances did come though. On the counter attack, they put the home sides defence under pressure but they held strong and kept them out. Corinthians came very close to scoring from one of their first half short corners but thanks to the pressure of defensive short corner runners Roy and Glenn Chapman who put the visitors off enough to keep it all square at half time. The second half was very similar, both sides gave it everything and it continued with end-to-end excitement. Enniscorthy were awarded a penalty flick mid way through the second half after a Corinthian’s player stopped the ball illegally from crossing the line from a shot on goal after a short corner. Clive Rothwell the South East side’s captain stepped up, but unfortunately couldn’t push the ball passed the very relieved Corinthians goalkeeper. Shortly after the Dublin side were denied a goal of their own to break the deadlock by the out reaching hand of Graham Hill, who pulled off a brilliant save. It all ended square in the Astro Centre, with some sore tired bodies on both sides. For Enniscorthy, this was their final game of 2014 and a welcome break after the tough first half to the season. Their next outing in the New Year will be against Corinthians once again when they travel to St Columbus College on the 10th January, you can be sure another tough game will be on show. Squad: Graham Hill; Andrew Rothwell; Keith OgilEvie; Clive Rothwell (c); Martin Veitch; Roy Chapman; Glenn Chapman; David Simmons; Jason Rothwell; Jonathon Rothwell; Seamus McAlister; Liam Jowett; Robbie Walshe; Daithí Medcalf; Rory Maguire; Ivan Rothwell. |
