A great comeback by the U14 Boys

Enniscorthy U14 boys secured a 4-2 victory at home last Sunday against Railway Union in the Boys U14 Leinster league.

A tough first 20 minutes for the home side saw them trailing by 2 goals. However a couple of changes of position by coach Fraser Rothwell turned the game around and saw the first half finishing 2-1.

A very confident Enniscorthy team dominated the second half with multiple shots on goal resulting in three great scores. An outstanding performance from all members of the Enniscorthy team.

A great game from our 1st yr Girls

Last Sunday saw Enniscorthy 1st year girls take on Newbridge away in the 2nd round of the West Leinster League. The level of performance from both teams was right up the scale and the girls played with great heart and passion.

Right from the tip off, both teams were alert and ready. As Newbridge began to press high up the pitch, defenders Katie Sutton, Sophie Gillot, Orla May Culhane, Aoife Mahon and Laura Smith did extremely well to clear any threatening shots on goal and keep the home team at bay. With Susannah Doyle, Aoife Mernagh and Ciara Kelly working hard in mid field, they created some great opportunities for forwards Hannah Sweeney, Elaine Quigley and Niamh Ogilvie but unfortunately none of these were converted, keeping the scores level going into the second half.

With a few positional changes Eimear Doyle (6th class), Rianna Hourihane and Emer Doyle (1st year) were introduced to the game. Play swung from end to end with some near misses for both teams and so full time score was 0-0.

In extra time, the girls showed amazing determination and heart and did not let an excellent Newbridge attack faze them. The game ended scoreless and it has been agreed by both Enniscorthy and Newbridge coaches that a replay will be scheduled for March 15th to decide which team will go through to the semi finals of the West Leinster League.

It was an outstanding performance by two evenly matched teams and the standard of hockey on display last Sunday was undisputedly top notch. The Enniscorthy girls put in a magnificent performance against a very strong 2nd year Newbridge side. Every Enniscorthy player put their heart and soul into this thrilling match and it was by far the best performance of the season!

U10 Boys in action

Enniscorthy U10 boys hosted a blitz on Sunday 22nd February at Astro Active Centre Enniscorthy. Despite the very wet and windy weather, there was a wonderful attendance of enthusiastic determined young boys all coming for a great game of hockey and the hope of scoring a goal or two.

For the spectators huddled under the umbrellas, there was a great display of newly acquired hockey skills with plenty of goals scored.

We were delighted to welcome teams from Corinthians, Monkstown, Avoca, Waterford and Wicklow. A big thank you to all who travelled despite the weather.

Enniscorthy Men remain top of Division 7

Liam Jowett struck with just over ten minutes remaining to seal all three points for Enniscorthy at a rain and wind- swept Astro Active Centre on Wednesday night.

The home side had gone into the match with a narrow lead at the top of division seven and were hoping to extend their lead against the league's basement side. Manager Fraser Rothwell deployed his side in a 4-3-3 formation, with Pierce, Clive Rothwell, Ogilvie and Andrew Rothwell defending Graham Hill's goal. Jonathon Rothwell, Roy Chapman, and David Simmons were deployed across midfield, while Jason Rothwell, Ó Suilleabháin and McAlister provided the attacking threat.

The opening salvoes of the encounter saw Enniscorthy push forward aggressively, and the 'Gate defence had to be alert to the dangers provided, in particular from Ó Suilleabháin, playing against his former club. Indeed it was the Corkman who opened the scoring, following a blizzard of shots on the visitor's goal by his team-mates. The lively home crowd could be forgiven for expecting a flurry of goals to follow- score difference could yet prove to be decisive in the final standings of the league- but instead the setback seemed to stiffen the Dubliner's resolve. Strong goalkeeping provided a platform for an improving away team effort; while the visitors never took control of proceedings, the men in green played their best hockey in the middle third of the first half. Good work from Pierce and Clive Rothwell, in particular, kept the Enniscorthy goal secure. Jason Rothwell was enduring a frustrating time as the Wexford men lacked quality in the final third, over- hitting passes and on occasion attempting to work the ball down field in an over- elaborate manner. The Dublin side earned a numebr of short corners but never seriously threatened Graham Hill's goal. Enniscorthy, though, were able to re-assert control by the end of the half.

'Gate began the new half in a rather unorthodox manner, sending a high aerial deep into the Enniscorthy defence, where it was claimed by Ogilvie. From an attacking point of view that was about as good as it got for the Crumlin side, as the hosts were totally dominant by the end of the contest. Their grip on the game was hardly affected by the loss of Symmonds to injury; Robbie Walshe replaced him. In the personnel reshuffle that followed, Jowett (who had replaced McAlister) took up station on the right side of midfield, with Walshe up front and Ó Suilleabháin slotted into a midfield berth. The league leaders became more confident on the break and an air of inevitability came over proceedings.

The second goal broke the visitors. A long ball from defence found Ó Suilleabháin, who laid off to Chapman. Looking up, he spotted Jason Rothwell on the right; the his pacy ball found Jowett in the semi-circle, who was able to fire past the 'Gate keeper. Shortly after, the increasingly confident Jowett had an excellent chance to make it 3-0. Finding himself alone and in plenty of space at the top of the semi- circle, he attempted a dazzling reverse shot but sent the ball over the bar.

So the dream lives on for Enniscorthy: top of division seven, with three games left to play - all at what has become somewhat of a fortress at the Astro Active Centre. The prospect of a second league title in two years, and promotion to division six, is there for the taking.

It was a beautiful Spring morning for hockey as our U12 girls took on Wexford in a blitz. Our young players displayed some of their new skills & put into practice some new moves they have recently learned in training.

Enniscorthy U16 Vs Carlow

Enniscorthy U16 girls took on Carlow on Saturday in the Astro Active Centre. A great game of hockey was played by our local girls putting Carlow under pressure from the very start. Unfortunately Carlow were awarded a short corner which was executed brilliantly to give the only score of the first half. Enniscorthy had most of the possession. Defending very well with Kim O'Conner pulling off a lot of great saves Carlow managed to score a second goal with minutes to go. well done to all the girls for putting in a great effort to Laura Smith who subbed up from U14 and Alan Smith who umpired game. Our girls defended very well, with Kim O'Connor pulling off a number of great saves. Carlow managed to score a second with minutes remaining. Well done to all the girls for putting in a great effort, and especially to Laura Smith who subbed up from our under 14 squad. Many thanks also to Alan Smith who umpired the game.
