With memories of last weekend's defeat to North Kildare still very much alive, Enniscorthy's Ladies 1st XI were eager to return to winning ways when they travelled to Suttonians on Saturday, and returned with all three points following a resounding win.
Straight from the first whistle, Enniscorthy’s hunger was obvious. From push back, Enniscorthy attacked up the right side of the pitch, strong and accurate passing putting the home-side defence under pressure. Within two minutes, an attack up the right wing and a cross into the circle for a deflection by winger Olive Lett saw the ball in the back of the net and the first score on the board. Enniscorthy were awarded two successive penalty corners minutes after, and a shot from forward Anna Flood struck just wide. Ten minutes into the first half, the visitors doubled their lead following yet another penalty corner. An injection from Anna Flood found captain Leah Chapman who passed left to Jessie Flood; her ball was saved by the home goalkeeper. An attentive Anna Flood, though, managed to nab the ball from the rebound and squeezed it past the 'keeper. The Slaneysiders showed great skill as they executed excellent communication and passing, particularly between midfielders Laura Bailey, Leah Chapman and Jessie Flood. This exemplary teamwork once again paid off as Anna Flood received the ball worked up the right side of the pitch, and a cross destined for winger Hannah Sweeney was deflected into the goal by a Suttonians defender. After half-time, Suttonians - who had upped the ante in the minutes before the break- continued to apply pressure and kept the visitors on their toes. An Enniscorthy long corner was cleared by the home side, and despite numerous counter-attacks from the hosts including a penalty corner, the Enniscorthy defence managed to keep a clean sheet. Shortly before the final whistle, an excellent pass up the line by right-back Hannah Graham found winger Anna Flood who drove into the circle and a powerful shot soared past the keeper and nestled itself inside the far post . Enniscorthy Ladies 1st XI next league encounter - a crucial one with just four points separating the top four sides - will be against Skerries 2nd XI at home on Saturday. Enniscorthy currently lie second on goal difference to UCD, but crucially both the Students and third-placed Newbridge, as well as fourth-placed North Kildare, have games in hand over the Slaneysiders. This league is sure to go down to the wire. Squad: Norah McGinty, Katie Owen, Julie Watchorn, Laura Smith, Hannah Graham, Laura Bailey, Leah Chapman, Jessie Flood, Hannah Graham, Anna Flood, Laura O’Leary, Susannah Doyle, May Wickham, Olive Lett Coach: Donal Doyle Enniscorthy 1st XI men were looking to recover from last weeks 1-0 defeat to local rivals Wicklow as they travelled to Dublin to take on Railway Union.
Although Saturday’s clash was top versus the bottom in Division 4, Donal Doyle and his men were under no illusions that it was going to be a walk in the park, as this season thus far has seen some unlikely teams take points off each other. The Wexford side were without their top goal scorer James O’Sullivan who has been side-lined with a hamstring tear which occurred in last week's defeat to Wicklow, and is looking doubtful for much of the rest of the season. However, they welcomed back one of their top goal scorers from last season, Lithuanian Edmundas Liukimas who had been out for the majority of the season with a hand injury. The Slaneysiders started tentatively as they looked to get a feel for the game and their opposition. The defence of Simmons, Cooke and Rothwell cousins - Andrew and Ivan -moved the ball around well and were finding holes in the opposition midfield. Enniscorthy gained a number of penalty corners in the first half, but failed to take full advantage of them, Liukimas coming the closest to opening the scoring when his shot went narrowly wide. The two sides went into the break all square despite the Wexford men side being on top and having the lions share of the possession. The second half started with the visitors continuing to have most of the ball and in the initial stages of the half gained a penalty corner, but again to no avail, Enniscorthy wingers English, Durnan and Dunne were all causing trouble for their opposite numbers, using their speed and skill to their advantage. Dunne put the ball in the back of the net for his side but unfortunately for the young attacker the ball struck his foot before he took full control of the ball. Mid way through the half Enniscorthy defenders Ivan and Andrew Rothwell made tracks up the right wing to set up the first and only goal of the game. A ball slotted through the defence from Ivan found Andrew on the end line from where he passed the ball to Roy Chapman who struck the ball sweetly between the Railway goalkeeper’s legs. Enniscorthy continued to assert their dominance on the game and following Chapman's opener, a strike from Rynhart went just wide of the upright. Railway themselves - perhaps sensing Enniscorthy's vulnerabilities- pushed forward and won themselves a penalty corner with two minutes remaining. They scored from this but to Enniscorthy’s relief it was disallowed. The game finished with the Wexford side adding three more points to their tally, maintaining their four-point gap at the top of Division 4. Doyle’s men will now set their sights on their next opponents, second -placed Pembroke Wanderers, just four points behind the Wexford men. This game will take place at Serpentine Avenue on 10th March. Enniscorthy Squad: Graham Hill, Andrew Rothwell, Ivan Rothwell, David Simmons, Cory Cooke, Glenn Chapman, Roy Chapman, Seb Rynhart, Daithi Medcalf, William Durnan, Jacob English, Charlie Dunne, Edmundas Liukimas. Coach: Donal Doyle. Manager: Fraser Rothwell The two girls under 16 sides both put in impressive performances on Saturday, which is sure to cause selection headaches for coach Alan Smith ahead of the Junior Jacqui Potter Cup Plate semi - final clash with Boyne in Drogheda on Sunday. The intermediate A side defeated Newbridge 1-0, the all important goal coming form Niamh Ogilvie. Their intermediate yellow colleagues had a comprehensive win over Newbridge B, winning 4-0 with goals from Rebecca Leech and Tara Somers.

The intermediate yellow (under 16) girls had a comprehensive win over Naas on Sunday, continuing an impressive run of form in their league. With a solid backline of Ailbhe Harrington, Lettie Hassett, Muireann Murphy and Alexi Gillot working tirelessly from the county Kildare side, their team-mates in midfield and up front created havoc in the final third of the pitch. Impressive passing, positioning and movement throughout the match resulted in a flurry of scores from Emer Bowe, Tara Somers, Dervla Walsh and Rebecca Leech, Enniscorthy running out 7-1 winners.
Squad: Alice Medcalf, Ailbhe Harrington, Lettie Hassett, Muireann Murphy, Amy Murphy, Dervla Walsh, Hannah Neville, Rebecca Leech, Tara Somers, Emer Bowe, Alexi Gillot, Saibhe Ryan. Meanwhile, the under 16 girls A side took on Donnybrook side – and league leaders - Muckross at the Astro Active Centre on Sunday. Enniscorthy went into the game hoping for a solid performance ahead of their forthcoming Junior Jacqui Potter Cup Plate semi final, and they duly delivered. While Muckross won two penalty corners in the first half and shaded the possession stakes, the defensive quartet of Mahon, Smith, Graham and O'Brien proved more than equal to the task. In fact, Enniscorthy could have taken the lead but Caoimhe Larkin – attacking from the left wing – saw her shot go narrowly wide, missing the post by millimetres. The second half was an end to end thriller as both sides fought hard for a win. Muckross won three penalty corners – none of which troubled Enniscorthy's goalkeeper McGinty. Enniscorthy's midfield – Farrell, Kidd and Rogan (with Farrell later making way for Susannah Doyle) – worked hard throughout. A point gained for Enniscorthy and a first time for Muckross to be held scoreless this season in all competitions. Squad: Nora McGinty, Laura Smith, Eabha Farrell, Ellen Rogan, Beibhin O'Brien, Susannah Doyle, Hannah Graham, Niamh Ogilvie, Leah Kidd, Aoife Mahon, Hannah Sweeney, Martha Dunne, Eimear Doyle, Caoimhe Larkin, Rebecca Ogilvie. Saturday saw the Enniscorthy ladies second XI take on Genesis VII in Division 12 at the Astro Active Centre.
The home side started strong with some clever attacking passages using both wings. An experienced Genesis defensive line denied the Enniscorthy attack which resulted in a quick turnaround of play, Genesis sweeping up the field to record their first goal. Enniscorthy came under fierce pressure in the following 10 minutes with 3 penalty corners awarded against the home side. Excellent work by a cool and collected Enniscorthy defensive line at the penalty corners - with particularly brave play by first runner Eleanor Bolger – helping to keep Genesis at bay. Laura Redmond remained a continuous force in the first half with some great attacks and strong passages of play up the wing. The first five minutes in the second half saw the strong Genesis forward trio score another goal. The home side took a while to get back in the game which resulted in another Genesis goal. Three goals down, the home side fought back hard and kept play up high but again the Dublin side's hard-working defence shut down Enniscorthy's attack. The second half had excellent plays from Scorthy players, especially the the back line with particular strong passages of play by Muireann Nic Corcráin. Time ticking, Hickey received a great pass from Bolger which resulted in another excellent pass by Redmond into the circle which was missed by Hayes. Neville in goal made a number of outstanding saves to keep the Dublin side at bay throughout but ultimately the experienced opposition prevailed on a 4-0 scoreline. Squad: Julie Hayes, Roisin Ó Muirí, Bridget Gainford, Laura Redmond, Amy Dalton, Emer Doherty, Eleanor Bolger, Elaine Hickey, Megan Dempsey, Mairéad Neville, Muireann Nic Corcráin. |
