Enniscorthy's men continue to maintain their place on the summit of division eight following a 2-2 draw with Railway Union V at a stormy Astro Active Centre.
Following their agonising cup defeat, Enniscorthy were determined to respond positively. In what were challenging conditions, the Slaneysiders quickly stamped their authority on the game, dominating possession but were unable to seriously threaten the Dubliner’s goal. Occasional forays inside the host's third were easily dealt with by the back four of Ogilvie, Costello, Andrew Rothwell and Clive Rothwell. Once again Jason Rothwell- operating dangerously on the right side of attack- found space along the sideline but his team mates were unable to seriously trouble a well-marshalled green and yellow defence.
Both sides decamped to the dressing rooms for the half time interval, amid monsoon- like conditions. Manager Fraser Rothwell urged a concentration on basic skills, and it was an invigorated Enniscorthy side which lined out for the second half. His side provided sharper attacking threat- though shots on goal were at a premium- and a much more free- flowing game developed. Ó Suilleabháin finally broke the deadlock, deflecting the ball past the Railway 'keeper in the midst of a goalmouth scramble.
Enniscorthy knew a second goal would put the game beyond the reach of Railway, but were unable to unlock the visitor's defence. Instead it was Railway who struck next, Ken Moulton striking past John Casey following a short corner. The intensity of the match noticeably quickened as both sides went in search of a winner. Ó Suilleabháin made it 2-1 following a feed through from Roy Chapman, and Enniscorthy felt that the three points were theirs. Railway, though, refused to give up and Tony Spillane equalised with just three minutes left on the clock. Rory Maguire had a last- minute chance to claim victory but the fast- moving ball eluded his stick.
Enniscorthy go into the Christmas break four points clear at the top of division eight and remain unbeaten, but the squad will be disappointed not to have claimed all three points.
