Half time quickly came with a score line of 2-1. Enniscorthy began to get more into the game but chances were of a premium. Clontarf held the ball well at the back as Enniscorthy allowed no easy passes up the field. A mistake from the sweeper finally came and Medcalf pounced, as he closed in on the keeper he was tripped by the last defender with a penalty stroke being awarded and a straight red card for the culprit. Clive Rothwell made no mistake with the penalty stroke. Enniscorthy now sensed a victory was possible and pushed hard to the finish. No winner was to come and the sides finished all square.
Enniscorthy 1st mens team travelled to Mount Temple School last Saturday to take on Clontarf whom they had drawn 2-2 with earlier in the season. From the start Clontarf hit the ground running and Enniscorthy faced a wave of attacks with goal mouth action being the order of the day. Keith Ogilvie and Clive Rothwell lead the defence but the wall was broken after 15 mins. Clontarf taking a deserved lead. The Enniscorthy men did enter danger territory on occasion but each time the attack was easily dealt with. Things were to get worse for the men in purple as Jason Rothwell received a yellow card after a disagreement with the umpire. Within minutes Clontarf were 2 up after a goal mouth scramble. Roy Chapman now dropped into centre midfield with Medcalf in a 4-4-2 formation. Clontarf kept coming but Enniscorthy’s luck was to turn in a bizarre series of events. The umpire called Jason Rothwell back on who was at the far end of the pitch as Daithi Medcalf cleared in desperation. The clearance fell into the path of Rothwell who now only had the keeper to beat,he calmly drew the keeper and squared to the supporting John McWey who finished easily.

Enniscorthy's mens second eleven endured a frustrating Saturday afternoon at the Astro Active Centre as they were unlucky to fall to a single goal against Navan.
The difference between the two sides came mid-way through the first half, as the Meath men punished the hosts from a short corner in one of their few chances of the game. The second period saw Enniscorthy dominate proceedings in the teeming rain but were unable to seriously threaten the Navan goal. Eamon Sweeney and William Durnan produced the Slaneysiders best chances of the game, and there were some positive attacking performances from Alan Smith, Jonathon Rothwell and Mick Jordan. From the start Wexford were very strong putting Enniscorthy defence under pressure in the opening minutes. This ended in a long corner which also lead to the opening goal of the game. After ten minutes Wexford won a short corner but failed to score. The Wexford attack continued strong but an excellent effort from Kim O’Connor, Roisin O’Muiri, Roisin Nolan and Aine O’Brien in defence and goal keeper Aoife Foran made some brilliant saves. Enniscorthy had a break through with Stephanie Kinsella and Meagan Petzke making a great run up the field in hope to score. After 20 minutes we saw a great run from Roisin Nolan and Caroline Doyle making it up into the circle but failing to score. Wexford stayed strong and their second shot on goal found its way into the back of the Enniscorthy net.
Pressure was put on as goalkeeper Aoife made more brilliant saves from the strong Wexford attackers. Another attack from Enniscorthy but was quickly defended by Wexford defence. They found themselves quickly inside the Enniscorthy circle which came to their third goal of the match. Meagan, Fiona, Orlaith and Niamh were working hard in the middle of the field to get another attack for Enniscorthy but just before half time Wexford got another short corner leading to their next goal just as the half time whistle went. The second half started off with Wexford attack once again being very strong. Roisin O’Muiri linked a great pass out the wings to Niamh Buttle where Enniscorthy were putting Wexford defence under pressure where they were unfortunate not to secure a goal. The girls in Enniscorthy defence were holding the back line strong when an unstoppable shot came from the Wexford attack. Some excellent clearings in the back line came from Roisin Nolan and Kim O’Connor where they linked up with Fiona, Niamh and Meagan who put in great efforts to break through the Wexford defence. Attack from Wexford was strong but Enniscorthy defenders stood up well and goalie Aoife made some brilliant saves. Enniscorthy were making an excellent effort to put Wexford under pressure and keep the ball away from their goal. About twenty minutes into the second half Wexford managed another unstoppable shot from the edge of the circle. Roisin Bridges, Stephanie Kinsella and Orlaith Breen were working very hard in the middle of the field to get the ball into the Wexford circle. Just before full time Wexford got the last short corner and scored. Overall it was a great effort made from the Enniscorthy girls. Full time score: 7-0 Enniscorthy ladies XI were in action against Wexford ladies XI on Sunday morning. The reverse of this fixture earlier in the season finished with a 1-0 victory to the girls in green. From the start Wexford picked up from where they had left off in the previous encounter by putting pressure on the Enniscorthy defence. This resulted in an early short corner which provided the opening goal, a thundering shot giving Fiona Rothwell no chance in the Enniscorthy net. Over the next ten minutes Wexford won two more short corners which failed to trouble the Enniscorthy defence. After this the cathedral town side kicked into action with Anna Flood starting to link well with Sonja Rynhart in midfield. It was now Enniscorthy who began to boss proceedings with Nancy Dunphy winning the first attacking short corner. Rynhart’s strike at goal met a Wexford foot; the resulting short lead to a third in a row after an infringement in the goalmouth by a Wexford defender. No mistake was made with the third attempt as Nancy Dunphy fluently cracked the ball off the Wexford backboard from the top left of the semi circle. Wexford kicked on again and Molly Boyne along with an impressive Olive Lett had to be alert to keep Wexford at bay. Boyne made a solid clearance to Sonja Rynhart who made a run to the circle where she won a short corner. Anna Flood got a quick, strong shot away from the resulting corner but Wexford dealt well with it. Róisín O’Muirí, on her debut with the 1sts, made an outstanding effort to hold off the keen Wexford attackers clearing the ball out wide to link with Nancy Dunphy. The latter- playing extremely well in a more forward role than usual- was finding some space on the right which lead to Leah Chapman getting a strike on goal which was saved by the Wexford keeper. At half time it was honours even at one each. Before action resumed the umpires pulled in both captains to discuss discipline as events threatened to boil over on more than one occasion in the first half. Wexford started the second half strong and had an early short corner which proved fruitless. Not long into the second half, a clash of heads during a strong tackle, unfortunately saw another Enniscorthy debutant- Laura Redmond- out of action for the remainder of the game. Aine O’Brien, also on her debut with the 1sts, had a number of key and skilful interventions at this stage to aid her defence, along with Molly Boyne and Katie Owens' excellent efforts on the back line. Two more short corners were earned by Wexford, the second of which was beautifully cleared by Ruth Harrington. Chapman was now beginning to pick up loose ball in the centre of the field and linked well with Sonja Rynhart who was unfortunate to not have secured a goal. It was shortly after when Rynhart picked up the ball on half way and headed towards goal, rounding the last defender she struck her shot while at the same time receiving a cynical push in the back which left the umpire with no option but to award a penalty corner. A war of words then erupted which resulted in a green card for a Wexford defender. The resulting short lead to a second short which Wexford dealt with. Wexford won a final short near the stroke of full time but yet again no goal was produced. The game finished 1-1 which is an extremely encouraging and well deserved result for the Cathedral town girls. Enniscorthy women's 2nd team faced local rivals Carlow's 1st team in Kilkenny on Sunday. Although putting in an excellent first half performance, Enniscorthy found themselves on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline.
Enniscorthy were leading 1-0 within the first 7 minutes, a quick pass finding Lillian Howlin and she was able to bury the ball in the back of the net. Solid defensive play between at the back made life extremely difficult for the Carlow attack, though Carlow were able to win a short corner soon after the opening score. This, though, produced an excellent save from goalkeeper Aoife Foran, and the ball was well cleared to the wings by Kim O' Connor. Throughout the first half there was excellent passages of play and passing by the Slaneysiders, with excellent attacking movements made by Aoileann Hourihane, Niamh Buttle, Caroline Doyle, Orlaith Breen and Meagan Petzke. Carlow were able to equalise shortly before half time, and found the lead in the second half, before winnig by two clear goals. Despite the defeat, the Enniscorthy management team of Irene Doyle, Ivanna Yates and Jacinta Kinsella can be satisfied with one of their side's best performances of the season, and one which augurs well for the future. Enniscorthy Squad: Aoife Foran, Emma Doyle, Meagan Petzke, Elaine Hickey, Aoileann Hourihane, Róisín Bridges, Lillian Howlin, Niamh Buttle, Caroline Doyle, Kim O' Connor, Roisin Nolan, Orlaith Breen, Saoirse Power, Caroline Doyle, Georgina Izatt, Eleanor Ni Bholguidhir Enniscorthy's first-choice men's eleven picked up their first win of 2016 with a 2-0 derby success over Wicklow at a bitterly cold Astro Active Centre on Centre on Saturday.
The home side entered the encounter fresh from an encouraging 2-2 midweek draw against Dublin side Avoca, and their first-half display showed that they had picked up from where they had left off. The Wexford men dominated proceedings from the whistle, Liam Jowett finding plenty of room to manoeuvre down the right side of midfield. Glenn Chapman had his side's first opportunity on goal after only 5 minutes, receiving a long corner ball from Clive Rothwell, but his deflected shot went wide. Four minuts later Enniscorthy cranked up the pressure, winning two short corners in rapid succession, but were unable to capitalise on the opportunities. Wicklow slowly began to find their feet after a strong opening first fifteen minutes for the Donal Doyle- coached side, with Nuzum and O'Sullivan proving to be tricky customers for the home defence. However, Enniscorthy began to find their groove again and just past the twenty- minute mark Glen Chapman opened the scoring, a ferocious shot from the outer reaches of the right-hand side of the semi circle finding its way into the bottom left corner and leaving the Wicklow goalkeeper with no chance. Just two minutes later O'Sullivan had the opportunity to level matters but Graham Hill produced a spectacular save- his first of several - to keep the one goal advantage. In fact, Roy Chapman was able to make it 2-0 just over five minutes later and on the verge of half time as he got the faintest of touches on the ball-though Edmundas Luikimas may also have had a claim, hovering near the post- following a speculative shot into the semi-circle by Daithí Medcalf. On the restart Wicklow emerged a totally different team, and with less than five minutes on the clock had won a short corner, shot wide, and forced a fine save from Hill in the Enniscorthy goal. A protracted siege of the Wexford men's goal then ensued, with Wicklow winning two more long corners and two short corners, but Wicklow were unable to find a way past the Enniscorthy defence. Clive Rothwell secured a brief respite for the home side with almost fifteen minutes gone, a huge aerial ball finding Niall Maguire on the left side of midfield. Quickly scanning, he was able to locate Liam Jowett with a pinpoint ball over on the right, but this promising move was snuffed out by Wicklow inside their semi-circle. By the twentieth minute of the second half the Wicklow dominance had faded, though the visitors were still highly dangerous, Martyn Veitch working well to negate an O'Sullivan attack, while Hill had to be called into action to deflect a cross wide when Nuzum was free at the back post, and Ivan Rothwell had to be alert when clearing the ball off the line following a Nuzum shot. Wicklow increased the pressure inside the last five minutes in search of a foothold in the game, and tensions were running high across the pitch; the Enniscorthy defence successfully withstood two more short corners as well as a long corner to finally emerge deserved winners. Squad: Graham Hill; Keith Ogilvie; Clive Rothwell; Martyn Veitch; Ivan Rothwell; Daithí Medcalf; Glen Chapman; David Simmons; Edmundas Luikimas; Jason Rothwell; Liam Jowett; John McWey; Roy Chapman; Niall Maguire; Jonathon Rothwell |
