Played at a bitterly cold Astro Active Centre, the home side got off to a great start when after good defensive play by Molly Boyne and Katie Owen, Enniscorthy counter attacked to find Leah Chapman, who put the ball in the back of the net after just three minutes. Gorey fought straight back with a strong beak down the middle resulting in a short corner, but their efforts were denied thanks to some string work by the Cathedral town defence.
Enniscorthy's dominance continued when intricate link play from Sonja Rynhart, Nancy Dunphy and Leah Chapman leading to an Enniscorthy short corner; Rynhart's resulting effort narrowly missed the top corner of the goal In what was becoming a ding-dong encounter, a quick break up the field left Gorey with a failed shoot at goal, safely watched all the the way by goalkeeper Fiona Rothwell. Some conteroversial decisions resulted in Rynhart being sin bined for 2 minutes, with Gorey utilising this to their advantage and finding an equaliser shortly before the half time interval.
The home side then had a dream start to the second half, Sonja Rynhart finishing off a move involving Anna Flood, Molly Boyne and Leah Chapman. Gorey were unbowed, however; Rothwell, O'Brien and Watchorn had to be particularly alert in keeping the visitors at bay.
The second half produced plenty of excitement and controversy: Anna Flood had a goal from a short corner disallowed; Chapman saw the sin bin; and Frayne was unlucky to score with a tremendous strike on goal.
With minutes remaining Flood had the ball in the back of the net again- and once more had it disallowed. Nancy Dunphy, though, was able to seal the win for the Slaneysiders after finding a gap through a wall of Gorey midfielders. It was a deserved win for Enniscorthy in what will be seen as a valuable encounter before cup action against traditional rivals Wexford.
