Enniscorthy 1sts braved the weather to meet rivals Kilkenny on a wet and cold Sunday. “Scorthy Win” rang out as the girls took to the field against their nemesis. The first minute saw a short corner to Kilkenny, which resulted in the first of their four goals. Ruth Harrington, Aine O’Brien and Leah Chapman maintained their strong defence from the start clearing a potential goal in the Enniscorthy circle. Fiona Rothwell kept her cool and saved a potential goal, as Kilkenny wasted no time in taking a free. A lot of play in the Enniscorthy circle was defended well by Julie Watchorn and Eleanor Bolger. However Kilkenny managed a second goal from play. Enniscorthy came back with some great attacking play by Bridget Gainford and Leah Chapman, and Lisa Frayne produced a lovely strike into the Kilkenny Circle. However Kilkenny defence deprived her of a goal. Enniscorthy won a short which Molly Boyne passed nicely to Anna Flood who struck it well but again couldn’t pass the Kilkenny defence. Leah played a great shadowing game against her mark, which saw her skilfully defend against a goal. She also hit a great shot in the Kilkenny circle which just missed the post. Caroline Doyle produced great work midfield moving the ball up front.
The first goal of the 2nd half was scored by Kilkenny after ten minutes. Molly Boyne and Anna Flood worked hard up front and won a short corner. Leah took the strike which narrowly missed the target. Good Kilkenny attacking play saw them score again 15 minutes into the second half.
Enniscorthy’s first goal came 5 minutes later with a scramble in front of the Kilkenny goal. A flurry of saved shots ended with Nancy Dunphy slotting the ball into the back of the net. Fiona Rothwell used all her skill to successfully save a brilliant Kilkenny shot on goal. Kilkenny got a short corner but the Enniscorthy defence remained strong.
The game ended with Kilkenny 1sts 4-1 overall victors but the Enniscorthy girls, pleased with their play, are gearing themselves up for their forthcoming cup clash.
