Enniscorthy Ladie’s 2nd hockey team were home to Wexford 2nds team on Sunday last. The Enniscorthy ladies were in search of first league win, but similar to recent matches the mission did not go in their favour. However, it was not without a great team spirit and a never give up attitude that piped Enniscorthy at the post; instead it was the Wexford attack making the most of those breaks in the second half that resulted in a 2-0 win to the Wexford ladies Enniscorthy defended the town goal and the Wexford tip off. The home side started well and were solid in their defence and attacking play. Solid defensive play by Aíne O’Brien, Ilsa Flynn, Catherine Dunbar and Róisín O’Múirí in the first half made it difficult for Wexford to break through. The Wexford forwards were forced into making errors due of the consistent support play of the backs and their goalkeeper Aoife Foran throughout the half. Today also saw the return of Meagan Petzke from injury who played a big part in a great team performance. Throughout the first half Enniscorthy’s excellent goalkeeper Aoife Foran was called upon and delivered every time. In that first half there was excellent passages of play and passing by the home side with excellent attacking movements made by Aoileann Hourihane, Avril Buttle, Caroline Doyle, Lisa Tyghe, Roisin Bridges and Lillian Howlin, but all their tireless work resulted in a 0-0 halftime score.
The first Wexford goal came in the early stages of the second half despite the home side defending hard and the valiant efforts of Elaine Hickey, Catherine Dunbar and the aforementioned backs and goalie. Enniscorthy continued to fight, but their effort was to no avail on the scoreboard. Instead the ‘Scorthy ladies were penalised on the scoreboard again by a strong Wexford side for the second time mid-way in the second half.
The Enniscorthy ladies under the guidance of Irene Doyle and Ivanna Yates, have being working hard, in this their first season for many of the players and will continue to go in search of their first win. The Christmas break comes for the South East league which will return in early 2016.
