Enniscorthy Ladies 1st XI travelled to St. Columba’s College to play Corinthians 3rd XI – fifth in Division 7- on Saturday. Frustratingly for the Slaneysiders, the game finished with a 1-1 draw thanks to a comeback goal from May Wickham.
The match commenced with Enniscorthy on the attack, however a slow start to the game led to Corinthians quickly gaining possession. The Dublin side's strong attack put the Enniscorthy defensive line up of Katie Owen, Laura Smith, Julie Watchorn and Hannah Graham under pressure early on. This early pressure yielded results when just ten minutes into the match, Corinthians scored from open play.
A quick reply was vital for the Slaneysiders. The midfield line of Olive Lett, Jessie Flood and and Leah Chapman worked hard to move the ball up the field to the forward line of Hannah Sweeney, Anna Flood and May Wickham. Two excellent chances presented themselves from two consecutive penalty corners, but both were well defended by the hosts.
The remainder of the first half of the game proved to be a tough battle for both sides. Some great passes from Julie Watchorn and Laura Smith from the back up to Anna Flood and Roisin Treacy allowed Enniscorthy to gain a number of circle entries. Laura O’Leary also had some great runs down the baseline. Enniscorthy, though, failed to capitalise, and found themselves a goal down at the break.
The second half of the game began with some great play from Jessie and Anna Flood in the centre of the pitch. When the Dublin side began attacking down the wings, right back Graham and left back Owen regained possession and moved the ball back up to the midfield. However, Corinthians continued to defend well. The ball was then moved up the left wing and carried into the circle. Jessie, Anna and Hannah all worked together to beat the Dublin side's defence. May Wickham got the final touch on the ball to level the score with twenty five minutes remaining.
The final quarter of the match saw the visitors push hard for a winner. At the other end, Corinthians were making life difficult for the visitors, forcing Enniscorthy into defending two more penalty corners, goalkeeper Norah McGinty making a number of strong saves in what proved to be an intense final ten minutes. Neither side, though, could break the deadlock at Whitechurch Park, and the sides finished level at 1-1.
Saturday sees Enniscorthy make the trip to The Maws and a tricky league encounter against fourth- placed North Kildare.
