The previous encounter between the two sides had resulted in a 0-0 draw but for this encounter manager Fraser Rothwell had an almost complete deck from which to choose, being minus only the speedy Chris St. Clair Johnson and defenders P.J. Pierce and Kieran Costello. The team also welcomed back Keith Ogilvie and Edmundas Liukimas to the fray, and both featured in a strong starting eleven.
Under a clear sky, and watched by an enthusiastic home crowd, the hosts, attacking the Moran Park end, began with some probing moves against the visiting back line. The experienced St. Brendan's defence, though, proved difficult to break down, with no serious tests for their goalkeeper. The breakthrough arrived midway through the first half, as in a 90- second spell Enniscorthy goaled twice, the on-form Jonathon Rothwell opening, followed by Ó Suilleabháin netting his fifth of the season. The home side pressed on, seeking more and the third and fourth came from the stick of Jason Rothwell. Seamus McAllister opened his scoring account for the season to make it 5-0 at the break, converting a Jason Rothwell cross at the back post following a determined run by Robbie Walshe into the top of the semi-circle.
With the points secured, manager Fraser Rothwell opted for youth in the second half. Still, Enniscorthy were able to outclass their opponents, with Jonathon Rothwell claiming his second of the day- this time following a short corner - and Liukimas completed the misery for the visitors with the seventh after being set up by McAllister.
The Division 8 season is now just over half way through, and Enniscorthy find themselves well placed for promotion. Over recent weeks the team has discovered a rich vein of attacking form, and in combination with the best defence in Leinster men's hockey, Enniscorthy are emerging as a formidable side. 2012-13 Leinster Minor Cup winners Corinthians- currently in third position- lie in wait for the Slaneysiders next weekend.
