The opening of the new Sunday League saw Enniscorthy's Senior Ladies 3rd team draw level at full time against a newly formed Kilkenny 2nd's team on a scoreline of 2-2 at the Astro Active Centre.
The blistering September sun did not falter Enniscorthy's efforts to record their first win of the season, with a never say die attitude that was present from start to finish. A solid start by the women saw many a chance on goal within the first five minutes thanks to the constant pressure made from the midfield and forward lines. Kilkenny's movement saw the ball eventually break through to their attack, with Enniscorthy's defence doing stellar work to tackle and cause hassle for any Kilkenny player that dared to go for a score.
Enniscorthy's constant pressure up the field finally saw fruition with the first score of the game converted by Mairead Neville. A ball that came from the wing by Muireann Nic Corcráin and was worked into the circle, saw Melanie Ní Dhuinn bring it in deep and pass it off to Neville, who rattled the backboard. This hugely boosted the confidence of the team, who went in at half time elated in the lead.
Kilkenny never faltered and soon came back with a score of their own in the second half. Enniscorthy had to apply the pressure from defence onwards, moving and creating chances for players to run with the ball up the line. A few penalty corners for Enniscorthy saw opportunities go amiss, but a score soon came after some scrappy play in the heart of the Kilkenny circle, which saw Melanie Ní Dhuinn drag the ball around the Kilkenny defence and flick it into the net. With Kilkenny on the back foot once again, the pressure was now on Enniscorthy to prevent any other score from happening and to press on to widen the gap. However, a ball collected by a Kilkenny attacker somehow found its way around the defence, beating goalkeeper Suzanne Redmond to hit the backboard.
Although it was not the result many wished for, to have levelled against a Kilkenny team who were tough opponents was quite the achievement, leaving the 3rds in a great position to push on and build from Sunday's success.
